IMPORTANT FROM WASHINGTON: Resignation of Hon. Lewis Cass, Secretary of State; THE SECESSION MOVEMENT; Editorial-The President and the Crisis (12/15/1860)

WASHINGTON, Friday, Dec. 14.

The resignation of Secretary CASS created a great sensation in political circles here. Although it was rumored early this morning, it was not consummated till late this afternoon. Various causes have been assigned. One report attributes it to the President's course towards Peru, in refusing to. arbitrate our difficulties, and withdrawing Mr. CLAY. Another says it was because the President refused to send troops to strengthen the garrison at Fort Moultrie; and still another, to escape the odium attaching to the Administration, which he charges with complicity in the secession programme.

All these reports are untrue, as I have been informed by the veteran patriot and statesman himself. Gen. CASS is a native of the United States which adopted the Constitution. He lived in the town where the Convention was held; remembers distinctly the rejoicings at the birth of the Confederacy; has grown with its growth and strengthened with its strength, and he is now unwilling to be present at its last expiring gasp. Having witnessed its birth, he says he is unwilling to remain here to witness its dissolution. Hence he retires from the Cabinet, but with the kindest feelings for President BUCHANAN and each member of the Cabinet, whom he complimented highly as honorable and patriotic men.

Mr. TRESCOTT, Assistant Secretary of State, resigned yesterday, but holds over a few days for the appointment off a successor. I have also reliable authority for saying that Secretary THOMPSON will resign, probably on Monday. Other members of the Cabinet may follow, and it is rumored that the President himself may abdicate.

In the conversation upon the affairs of the Union between the President and the Cabinet, the President and Gen. CASS are said to have shed tears at the probable fate of the country.
