The New Untouchables [Seattle's 'underclass' to get blanket immunity for all misdemeanor crimes]
City Journal ^ | 12/03/2020 | Christopher F. Rufo

Posted on 12/12/2020 9:39:33 AM PST by simpson96

In October, the Seattle City Council floated legislation to provide an exemption from prosecution for misdemeanor crimes for any citizen who suffers from poverty, homelessness, addiction, or mental illness. Under the proposed ordinance, courts would have to dismiss all so-called “crimes of poverty”—which, according to the city’s former public-safety advisor, would cover more than 90 percent of all misdemeanor cases citywide. In effect, the legislation would create a new class of “untouchables,” protected from consequences by the city’s powerbrokers.

This is the latest and most brazen effort in the city’s campaign to establish what might be called a “reverse hierarchy of oppression.” The underlying theory is that society has condemned the lower class to a life of poverty and stigma, which leads to addiction, madness, and indigence. The poor, in the logic of Seattle’s progressive elites, are thus forced to commit crimes—including violent crimes—to secure their very existence. Therefore, as society is the perpetrator of this inequality, the crimes of the poor must be forgiven. The crimes are transformed into an expression of social justice.

On a practical level, if this ordinance becomes law, it will effectively legalize an entire spectrum of misdemeanor crimes, including theft, assault, harassment, drug possession, property destruction, and indecent exposure. Criminals must simply establish that they have an addiction, mental-health disorder, or low income in order to evade justice. The impact of this measure would be enormous. In 2019, the Seattle Police Department reported 25,993 thefts, 8,442 assaults, 6,430 property offenses, 4,194 frauds, 3,910 trespasses, and 1,640 narcotics violations—representing 72 percent of all reported crimes. If the ordinance passes, nearly all these crimes would be permitted under law.

They are serious about this. They allowed and encouraged street savages to destroy, burn and steal in their cities. There was no prosecution.

This is an extension of that. They are allowing the underclass that they created to attack, steal from, rape and kill the people who work hard to pay for the underclass’s ebt cards and free money.

The ultimate goal is to take all our money and then eliminate us.

After my flights and when I return to SEATAC my folks will pick me up and drive fifty miles out and around Seattle in order not to have to drive through it; I refuse to ever enter that city again.

I am convinced that the end game is the total elimination of the middle class. Who does that sound like?

Italian mobs used to take care of neighborhood policing in NYC. I wonder eho will be doing that in Seattle? Bloods? Crips? MS-13?

Comes the hour, comes the man.

There are place like that now. Also have door locks/man-traps to limit entry of ‘customers’

I’ll try and find a pic to post

...The next step (to the extent it is not there already) is that the “victims without recourse” will need to form (or hire) neighborhood gangs to protect them...

I lived for a long time in an area that was heavily Mafia dominated. Petty crime was almost zero.

Shopkeepers and small business owners paid protection money, which most considered a second level of property tax, and the part that public opinion always gets wrong is that they really did get protection for their money.

When bunch of teens started hanging around in front of a girl friend's father's dry cleaning store, scaring customers away, the police explained to her father that the kids had civil rights and the police could not make them move. The Italians explained to the teens that they could have an accident if they did not move on, and they were gone in minutes.

If there wasn't a safe, attractive business district, there would be no small business to extort...

There will be neighborhood policing—but it may be gangs that do it.

Expect a surge in contract killings and vigilante justice.

elimination of the middle class

Exactly.

In the third world the upper class pays for private security everywhere they go.

Everybody else is on their own....

While these lefties claim to hate the rich, in fact they are creating a world where only the rich can have a good quality of life.

So much for “equal protection” under the Constitution.

It is pretty obvious that in the battle of the elites vs the middle class, the elites are winning. Trump increased the middle class, thus he had to go no matter what.

Eventually the tax base in Seattle will disappear and the population remaining will be the population, all of whom will live in gated armed guarded communities or out of town. The Safety part of the budget will be used to provide the armed guards and security systems for the elite that choose to live or move inside the city limits. Shooting someone breaking into your house with a machete will become a felony because the invader has not committed a felony by the time you shoot him. Legally you will only be able to shoot him after he has slashed you with the machete.

LOL- next they’ll bring in their accountants to advise them on what can be declared as tax write-offs too if someone should come along and steal what they had stolen-

At one point, a lady I know lived in a neighborhood which was under the protection of the local Hell’s Angels. They preferred to not have a heavy police presence around, so they told petty thieves that they got one warning, and after that would be “disappeared”.
