Woman dies after avoiding medical treatment due to fear of getting COVID-19

LONGMONT, Colo. (KDVR) — Sieglinde Manning said her 72-year-old mother died not from COVID-19, but because she feared getting the coronavirus.
The 54-year-old resident of Superior, Colorado said her mom hadn’t left the home the two shared in 9 months because she was terrified of contracting COVID.
Gudrun Manning, who went by the nickname “GG” for “Grandma Goody,” developed a urinary tract infection in mid-October.
Sieglinde said she recognized her mother’s symptoms and said in the past, similar infections had been successfully treated with an antibiotic. But this time, her mother was adamant she didn’t want to see a doctor or go to a hospital.
“I was too worried about her being upset with me, so I said, ‘OK, we’ll wait another day, we’ll wait another day.’ Another day was too late,” said Manning.
On Nov. 4, Sieglinde Manning rushed her mother to a nearby hospital in Louisville when her heart rate dropped to 42 beats per minute. But by then, hospital staff told her the 72-year-old’s kidneys had begun shutting down. Two days later, she died from sepsis.
Manning is convinced her mother would still be alive if she had taken her to the hospital two weeks sooner, when her mom first complained of symptoms.
“She’d be sitting over there yelling at me about one thing or another but she’d be alive. She really would be — there’s no doubt in my mind.”
The Centers for Disease Control reports four in 10 U.S. adults have reported avoiding medical care because of concerns related to COVID.
In the 10 weeks following the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic, the CDC reported emergency room visits dropped 23% for heart attacks, 20% with uncontrollable high sugar levels.
“The message is, if people have an urgent medical concern, they still need to get medical care. We can avoid needless deaths,” said Dr. Lisa Miller, a professor of epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health.
The number of deaths in Colorado has jumped dramatically in 2020.
Statistics from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment show from March 1 (when COVID deaths began) to Nov. 30, there have been 33,905 deaths compared to 29,690 in 2019.
That’s a 14% increase compared to the same 9 months in 2019.
Most of the excess deaths were due to COVID-19, about 9% of the 14% increase, but the other 5% were deaths due to non-COVID causes though many still likely related to COVID-19 because of delayed medical care.
“We know there are some indirect deaths that are not directly due to COVID but indirectly due to COVID because people have waited and not sought that medical care,” said Miller.
In addition, the number of excess deaths will probably be more than 14% in 2020, according to CDPHE, because there’s a two-month lag in reporting all deaths, which means the state tally for deaths in October and November is likely to grow.
“She just wasn’t my mom, she was best friend,” said Manning. She blames herself for not being able to convince her mom hospital staff are now better prepared than ever to minimize the spread of COVID in a health care setting.
“If I would’ve put my foot down, yes, she would’ve glared at me, she would’ve been pissed but she’d be alive. Put your foot down, go against their wishes because you will lose them if they don’t get treatment that they need,” said Manning.
Miller said people reluctant to see a doctor during COVID may want to try telehealth and if a doctor can’t help through a computer visit, the doctor may at least have more success convincing the patient to come in-person than a family member would.
The CDC website is clear: no one should delay medical care because they fear contracting COVID in a health care setting.
Oh? No other issues?
I agree.
I know a guy though here and he got sick with covid, or so they said. He had a mild cough and had to stay home for 2 weeks and miss work. Phew, at least he lived!
It’s known that wearing masks increases your risk of getting sick. I would be pushing the vitamins instead. There’s many posts about vit C, D, B, and zinc among other things. My parents are mid to late 60s and at first they were worried, but I told them what to do, and now they do and go as they like. They also won’t take any vaccine. Meanwhile some of their friends are fanatical mask wearers, and constantly sick.
The “irrational fear” is REAL ... I know people (family members in another state) who are so fearful that you cannot even have a logical, fact based discussion with them. Another young (early 20’s) relative in NYC is also fearful to the point that her parents are worried about her & describe her fear as being “terrified”. It has been somewhat of a shock to see people that I thought I “knew” go off the deep end so badly. There should be some sort of accountability in a very serious way for the media - Fauci as well. I know it will never happen, but it SHOULD.
As for the poor lady who died .... my dad will be 98 next week & he has advanced heart failure - I have not doubt that COVID would probably be the end of him. He also has peripheral neuropathy & his legs are numb to the knees. He constantly bangs his legs up, causing cuts, etc. & then he doesn’t take care of them or tell anyone else. So in the midst of the first wave of Lockdowns, he calls me in & shows me his leg - bright red, looking bad ... appears to be cellulitis (which he’s had before). I told him we needed to get to a doctor right away. We did not want to go to the ER & get caught up in that mess - he absolutely has to have someone with him to advocate for him & being separated was not an option. There is an urgent care clinic a few miles from the house & they said he had to come in (no telemedicine options). I also could not do telemedicine with his primary care physician (that he doesn’t see/like anyway) because we had no “patient portal” account set up for him.
It just so happens that we got an ad in the mail for a new service in our area that will “come to you”. There was an app & I had downloaded it so I could remember the company. I got on the app & ended up with a PA & medical technician coming out to see him within hours. They were masked up & the weather was so nice that he sat on the front porch while they checked him out. They agreed with my opinion that it was cellulitis & gave him the first antibiotic pill during their visit because it would take some time to fill the prescription they left. It was a great experience, frankly. We had to call them a second time when the cellulitis wasn’t resolving the way it should - changed antibiotics & all was good. If we had not had the home visit option, which was totally “lucky” on my part that I saved the app, I would have found a way to get dad to the urgent care center, come hook or crook, but it would not have been easy.
I have a couple friends who have it now. My brothers entire family had it. Two of my kids roommates have been exposed so they’re waiting. A whole bunch of other friends had it. My brothers father in law died WITH covid. My drug addict cousin has been committing slow motion suicide for 45 years but it went down as a covid death.
All said, I’m not taking it seriously. It’s a man made virus that was sent to us as an act of war from China. Our response to it has been reprehensible and aimed at fostering weakness not strength.
Fear is cancer
I have two family members for whom this was an almost identical scenario... both had medical assistance/intervention delayed to the point where it was too late.
How do you code “death by a lack of common sense”?
People are willing to live (and die) with an INFECTION, but are scared to death of a stupid VIRUS?!?!?
I’ll never understand how people are so trusting of our media and crooked politicians...
Supposedly it is more variable as far as symptoms and resolution, but who knows.
We do know that the hype is different. Pre-COVID, the government pondered how the public would react to stay home and other orders than many consider draconian. Need to try that to find out, they said in a report.
Compliance is outstanding! Fear works!
It has always been a shame that people would lose sight of their humanity and purpose when put into stressful condition, whether the stress is real, induced dishonestly, or imagined.
I personally assume nothing my government tells me is true. They are as bad as the press. Get on with life, and disregard those lying schmucks until they interfere "too much," a line they are getting close to crossing.
Some people are too stupid to live. Harsh; I know.
I had it.
It was like a nagging chest cold. Brought back symptoms of my teenage asthma. Yeah, I felt REAL crummy for a while, but here I am - recovered from it JUST as I have every OTHER cold/flu bug I’ve had over the past 50+ years.
What concerns me is that with this quarantine, I HAVENT caught a cold all year (been out of work and sitting home). I usually get 3-5 colds each year; I can hardly wait to see what the next common cold does to me now that my immune system hasn’t had a chance to work like usual..
We know people all over the country and world. Have heard rumors of those who have had WuFlu, but don’t know anyone first-hand. It’s going to be a BFD until the election is settled, and then will appear as it really is, i.e., a bad flu bug.
I’m in the vulnerable demographic, but am living my life without masks, social distancing, etc. Live free or die. I’ve canceled routine doctor’s appointments, not for fear of getting WuFlu, but for maximum hatred for masks.
Colorado Ping ( Let me know if you wish to be added or removed from the list.)
The very definition of “too stupid to live”.
I had two short hospital stays this year. Yes, it was no fun not having my wife with me. I just got chatty with the nurses (not flirting).
I’m doing all that, plus iodine supplementation. No sick days for almost 15 years.
I was home bound for over a year, underwent major back surgery Sept, 25th. Had a official hospital bracelet that said I did NOT have Covid. I am on my way to recovery, granny.
