Politico, Sept 7 2016:: Voters in four competitive states will cast ballots in November on electronic machines that leave no paper trail — a lapse that threatens to sow distrust about a presidential election in which supporters of both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton have raised fears about hackers tampering with the outcome.
The most glaring potential trouble spots include Pennsylvania, where the vast majority of counties still use ATM-style touchscreen voting machines without the paper backups that critics around the country began demanding more than a decade ago. It’s also a state where Trump and his supporters have warned that Democrats might “rig” the election to put Clinton in the White House, a claim they could use to attack her legitimacy if she wins.
Similar paperless machines are used heavily in Georgia, where the presidential race appears unusually close, and to a much smaller extent in Virginia and Florida, both of which are phasing them out. Florida has almost entirely abandoned the electronic machines following a number of elections that raised red flags, including a close 2006 congressional race in which Democrats charged that as many as 16,000 votes went missing.
This time, in a year marked by charges that Russian-linked hackers have breached Democratic Party organizations and state election offices, the lack of a paper ballot record in key states poses two potential risks to public confidence in the U.S. electoral system:

Partly its the privatization mania and crony capitalism of GOP elites and libertarians , I figured
But Maybe the GOPe establishment is just as happy seeing the system leading to the ouster of a nuisance outsider like Trump?
We need electronic voting with human and machine readable paper receipts that go into boxes in case they need to do a recount.
Every state should be what we do in Texas:
1. Show ID upon arrival
2. Get a paper ballot
3. Put the paper ballot into the machine
4. Select your choices on the screen of the machine
5. Confirm your choices on a final page of the screen
6. Have the machine print these choices back to you on the paper you inserted, giving you the ability to again read and triple check your selections.
7. Go to another machine where someone is supervising the input of the paper ballot into the machine and the machine reads it
Three key takeaways: 1. ID, 2. ability to confirm several times what your ballot says, 3. both electronic and paper trails
I take it you're saying the paper ballot is always available for audit, which is good. I wonder if the ballot is marked as it goes through the final read so that it can be linked to the machine that read it. Very iffy otherwise because of "the machine reads it".
I believe it is marked. I know that I can readily go online and confirm that my vote has been counted. Obviously it doesn’t tell you who for due to secret ballot requirements, but it does show the ballot cast.
Sounds almost fraud proof.

The Georgia SOS claims they have a “Paper Ballot for EVERY vote cast”.
