For the second time in a decade, demand for ammunition has outstripped supply in the United States. The first ammunition bubble was from 2012 to 2017. The next started in 2020.
Ammunition manufacturers have increased their capacity. In the face of increased demand, it has not been enough. Ammunition plants are running 24/7 to make profits while demand is high. Shortages still exist in the United States. Common calibers have disappeared from store shelves. Prices have risen. Panic buying and purchasing for private stockpiles have increased.
Those who purchased a stockpile in the interval between ammunition bubbles from 2017 to 2020 are considered wise and foresighted. At one point in October of 2018, .22 rimfire ammunition was available at 2.5 cents per round. How much ammunition is being produced and purchased in the United States market?
During the .22 rimfire bubble, the productive capacity was increased from about 4 billion rimfire rounds to 5 billion rimfire rounds per year. The National Shooting Sports Foundation has estimated total ammunition produced for the United States market in 2017 at 8.1 billion rounds. In 2018, the total ammunition production for the United States was estimated at 8.7 billion rounds. The numbers for 2019 should be published in December of 2020.
A reasonable extrapolation puts the amount of ammunition produced for the United States market at somewhat over 9 billion rounds, of which 5 billion are rimfire and 4 billion are centerfire rifle, pistol, and shotgun rounds in 2020.

I suspect that far less than 10% of the purchased rounds have been expended during target practice or hunting.
Prior to the War Against Trump, there were already trillions of rounds in the possession of the 100+ million law-abiding human citizens. Lots of Ammo from WW-II days is still suitable for use.
Yet, comes now the 10 or 20 million mentally ill, sub-human communist Democrats, globalists, and other such, begging for their apocalypse.

As such, there is a good reason why they push doctors and other Karens to quiz us on our ordnance inventory. There is an equally good reason why those wannabe-overlords are greeted with a lie or MYOFB retort.

A very simple data query of credit cards, Amazon and eBay orders, USPS images of letters and packages of sender addresses from gun related companies (the USPS images ALL mail), concealed carry permits, and NICS checks will turn up all those with guns and gun paraphernalia, and your neighbors would rat you out in a second.
A more advanced query of all databases will show with 99.995% probability who owns guns.
Anecdotally, given the wild swings in the market, a brick of .22 ammunition has been a much better investment than silver over the last couple of decades.

Years ago there was an anti-auto theft product on the market called The Club. People scoffed at the design flaws and that car thieves could simply cut through the steering wheel and evade The Club. But those Smartest Guys in the Room missed that The Club was a deterrent, and that simple car thieves would move to a car without a barrier to theft.
Yes, there is basically no way to stop a determined car their from taking your Camry. But I don't need to leave the windows open and the keys in the ignition. There is a big difference.

My son gets his TP and other supplies at a seedy gas station mart. Later I was reading how some of those places will take in TP, cleaners, etc. that was stolen, give the thief some cash, and then sell it on their shelves!
The have a couple 7 million dollar orders from the US Gov. That part of the issue.
Doesn't the military produce their own mil ammo at McCalaster OK and Lake City ?
