How Much Ammunition is Produced for the United States Market?
Ammoland.com ^ | November 27, 2020 | Dean Weingarten

For the second time in a decade, demand for ammunition has outstripped supply in the United States. The first ammunition bubble was from 2012 to 2017. The next started in 2020.

Ammunition manufacturers have increased their capacity. In the face of increased demand, it has not been enough. Ammunition plants are running 24/7 to make profits while demand is high. Shortages still exist in the United States. Common calibers have disappeared from store shelves. Prices have risen. Panic buying and purchasing for private stockpiles have increased.

Those who purchased a stockpile in the interval between ammunition bubbles from 2017 to 2020 are considered wise and foresighted. At one point in October of 2018, .22 rimfire ammunition was available at 2.5 cents per round. How much ammunition is being produced and purchased in the United States market?

During the .22 rimfire bubble, the productive capacity was increased from about 4 billion rimfire rounds to 5 billion rimfire rounds per year. The National Shooting Sports Foundation has estimated total ammunition produced for the United States market in 2017 at 8.1 billion rounds. In 2018, the total ammunition production for the United States was estimated at 8.7 billion rounds. The numbers for 2019 should be published in December of 2020.

A reasonable extrapolation puts the amount of ammunition produced for the United States market at somewhat over 9 billion rounds, of which 5 billion are rimfire and 4 billion are centerfire rifle, pistol, and shotgun rounds in 2020.

You’re right about powder and bullets being available but good luck if you are trying to find primers!

This is what the liberals will do with cowards who are too afraid to even say they have guns much less use them. I was hoping FReepers of all people had the guts to take a stand and say, "Damned straight I've got guns, and I ain't afraid to us them!"

2017 - 8.1 billion rounds

2018 - 8.7 billion rounds

2019 - 9 billion rounds (est.)

2020 - 9+ billion rounds (est.)

I suspect that far less than 10% of the purchased rounds have been expended during target practice or hunting.

Prior to the War Against Trump, there were already trillions of rounds in the possession of the 100+ million law-abiding human citizens. Lots of Ammo from WW-II days is still suitable for use.

Yet, comes now the 10 or 20 million mentally ill, sub-human communist Democrats, globalists, and other such, begging for their apocalypse.

The Leftists hate arithmetic.

“Apparently not enough. I have an 18 pk of 2 ply Charmin TP I’d be willing to trade for some .38/.357. :0)”

We’re good on toilet paper. My wife was recently awarded her “Combat Toilet Paper Badge” for close combat action around the TP pallets at Costco.

I make my own gas checks for cast rifle bullets. I never have tried to make my own primers, but I do save the little cups just in case. Hre is an article on making your own:

" Do I shoot up my precious ammo training at the range, or do I hold onto it for CWII?"

Shoot rimfire only, for now. It's more fun anyway.

One of the primary rules of engagement, is to not surrender your position.

It is the compliment to having a "Gun-Free Zone."

Similarly, there is a good reason why even the most ardent anti-4th Amendment loser has curtains obscuring their living room or bedroom from public observation.

It's also why FDR didn't ring up Berlin prior to D-Day to have an open-kimono strategy chat.

The planet (and the left) knows Americans have an "obsession" with guns and ammo. They generally don't know who has the goods. As such, there is a good reason why they push doctors and other Karens to quiz us on our ordnance inventory. There is an equally good reason why those wannabe-overlords are greeted with a lie or MYOFB retort.

No one alive today will be alive when a real hot CWII breaks out in the United States.

They generally don't know who has the goods.

That's pure 100% feedlot grade bullshit. If you bought a weapon from a retailer and and especially if you have a CC permit you're on a list in a feral grubermint data base.

“They generally don’t know who has the goods. “

Yes, they do. You’re not fooling anybody.

A very simple data query of credit cards, Amazon and eBay orders, USPS images of letters and packages of sender addresses from gun related companies (the USPS images ALL mail), concealed carry permits, and NICS checks will turn up all those with guns and gun paraphernalia, and your neighbors would rat you out in a second.

A more advanced query of all databases will show with 99.995% probability who owns guns.

Anecdotally, given the wild swings in the market, a brick of .22 ammunition has been a much better investment than silver over the last couple of decades.

Tell exactly that to my brother, a financial advisor for a well-known firm...”invest in previous metals, no, not gold or silver”. I look at boxes on 9mm, 5.56, etc. on the shelf here and then look at today’s online pricing. Unreal. Just yesterday a short wandering around using a searchbot showed cases of certain calibers are more than DOUBLE what they cost last year when no one knew about the incoming CCP19 virus.

Please read my comment again.

“They generally don’t know who has the goods. “(emphasis added)

Years ago there was an anti-auto theft product on the market called The Club. People scoffed at the design flaws and that car thieves could simply cut through the steering wheel and evade The Club. But those Smartest Guys in the Room missed that The Club was a deterrent, and that simple car thieves would move to a car without a barrier to theft.

Yes, there is basically no way to stop a determined car their from taking your Camry. But I don't need to leave the windows open and the keys in the ignition. There is a big difference.

Similarly, of course, anyone with access to that data and who can perform general sort and merge commands via unique ID can do what you suggest. Anyone with a gun understands that there is zero hope of complete anonymity.

But...that isn't generally "your neighbors" or your average loser in a riot. If you think Mary or Joe Blow down the street has a dossier of all your transactions, I have some tin foil.

More direct and to the point, anyone blabbing to friends and family their personal arsenal inventory is a rube. Indeed, there is a good reason why I'm writing to "CodeToad."

Hardware stores are good.

My son gets his TP and other supplies at a seedy gas station mart. Later I was reading how some of those places will take in TP, cleaners, etc. that was stolen, give the thief some cash, and then sell it on their shelves!

Hornady manufactures ammo not far from me. A couple friends work there. They always work 6-7 days a week 10 plus hors a day.

The have a couple 7 million dollar orders from the US Gov. That part of the issue.

Doesn't the military produce their own mil ammo at McCalaster OK and Lake City ?
