Women and girls are about to be portrayed in textbooks a lot differently by Pearson, one of the world's largest education companies

An education company producing school textbooks and exam papers has revealed guidelines to "flip" gender stereotypes in its products.

Pearson, which owns exam board Edexcel and is one of the country's biggest education companies, has asked employees to "avoid unconscious bias" by promoting "women and girls in traditionally masculine roles and vice versa".

It says this could include girls dressed as firefighters, astronauts or playing with trucks, and boys watering plants, playing in a pretend kitchen, or performing a dance competition.

"Show women as the business owner, painting the house, wearing the lab coat and fixing the car and men taking children to school, baking the birthday cake for colleagues, taking the meeting minutes and teaching the primary class," the guidance continues.

Developed alongside The Fawcett Society, the company says it is the first to make a commitment to tackle gender bias in its learning materials for children.

Such bias also includes behaviours ascribed to gender, such as "a woman being sensitive" and "a man being assertive", while physical characteristics have been advised to avoid stereotypes.

Pearson says an example of this would be of adding "long eyelashes to an animal to indicate they are female or a bow tie to indicate they are male".

Not sure whether they will want to take care of the mousetrap or unplug the toilet though.

I am female and I take care of close to 100% of the toilet unclogging in our household. Maybe in the bad old days you needed physical strength but there has yet to be a toilet clog that this 120 pound woman couldn't fix with modern plungers.

But Blondie? Not buying it.

Exactly! When women are adults and want to marry and have children...where are the men?

the girls should just carry guns....the great equalizer...

Spot on. The leftists claim to be for women's rights, but it turns out that women's rights do not extend to the basic right of self-defense in their world. An armed society is a polite society. Fear makes a respectful man.

Reminded me of Catholic school days, with Sister Mary Most Murderous scraping the chalk on the blackboard to get our attention... well, MY attention.

Man that broad did NOT like me... 300 pounds of mean and a mustache that would have made Stalin jealous... it twitches whenever she saw me, like a giant caterpillar ...

And then women reach their 30s and wonder why the guys that they date are so shallow and uninterested and not capable of most basic manly functions.

Not a problem if you marry a Taiwanese as I did. I don't have anything against American men but they send out a lot of mixed messages about what they want in a woman. Worldwide, there is no shortage of good men interested in a young woman with conservative values. In fact, demand exceeds supply. So I'd advise these women who bemoan the lack of good men to consider looking further afield.

All the Americab history classes in public school that I endured basically was the early Europeans arriving and a rehashing some bits of the revolutionary war.

My seventh-grade history class covered American history from ‘Age of Discovery’ to the Civil War. We also covered the U.S. Constitution for about 3 weeks. Students had to pass a test on U.S. Constitution to get their 8th-grade diploma (I taught at a K-8 school district and this was a state requirement).

Eighth-grade was from Reconstruction to as close to today as I could manage, but to be honest Viet Nam War got pretty short shrift since we were usually days away from their graduation. Again, we stopped to study MO state Constitution, and again they had to pass the test for their diploma.

A couple years ago, while lounging on the grass in our staked out area waiting for it to get dark for July 4th fireworks to start, I witnessed a little boy sitting on the ground next to me. He had no other toys than a doll. He was driving it by sliding it along the ground like a truck making truck noises. I will probably remember that till my dying day.

Afraid you are right. Women are paid less because most of us don’t work like that. When we were farming full time, Hubs would get up at 4 or 4:30 (earlier if necessary) milk cows, do chores on two other farms and then often work all day, milk cows again, eat supper, go out and drive tractor until well into the night. He would sometimes go 8 or 10 hours between meals.

I got too tired. I stayed in the house and cooked stuff, and helped milk cows.

One super cold winter he was losing weight on 4000 calories a day. I bumped him up to 6,000 with donuts and pies and he leveled off.

Most women just can’t work like that. I now have a factory technician job. Indoors. But it is 10 hours a day and it is kicking my butt.

“It says this could include girls dressed as firefighters...”

Yeah, show a 4’10” 125 lb. female “firefighter” carrying a 250 lb. rescue dummy out of the smokehouse.

My daughter teaches kickboxing and is a (gorgeous) badass. She always has her head on a swivel and stays out of situations that might make her vulnerable. Too many do fall into the category you describe.
