SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Tuesday, Nov. 20. The meeting of congratulation, which was, at first, intended for a county jubilee, has, unexpectedly, assumed gigantic proportions. An immense and excited crowd is in attendance, and the illumination is nearly universal and brilliant beyond anything ever seen in the West. All the public buildings and a vast number of stores and dwellings are ablaze with fantastic devices. In the dome of the State-House four locomotive head lights are blazing, clearly visible for many miles. A large procession of Wide-Awakes has been parading. When they came to the residence of Mr. LINCOLN they halted and called out the President elect with cheers that were irresistible. The tumult redoubled on his appearance. The storm of congratulation and clamor lasted many minutes, but quiet was at last restored, and Mr. LINCOLN said: MR. LINCOLN'S SPEECH. "FRIENDS AND FELLOW-CITIZENS: Please excuse me on this occasion from making a speech. I thank you for the kindness and compliment of this call. I thank you, in common with all others who have thought fit by their votes to indorse the Republican cause. [Applause.] I rejoice with you in the success which has so far attended that cause. [Applause.] Yet in all our rejoicings, let us neither express nor cherish any harsh feelings towards any citizen who, by his vote, has differed with us. [Loud cheering.] Let us at all times remember that all American citizens are brothers of a common country, and should dwell together in the bonds of fraternal feeling. [Immense applause.] Let me again beg you to accept my thanks, and to excuse me from further speaking at this time." Speeches were made in the Wigwam by Senator TRUMBULL, DON PIATT and others.

I see they had plenty of quinine in stock, it wasn’t an existential threat to humanity then.

Fortunately steam boiler explosions are no longer one either.

I run a steam power plant. Boiler explosions still happen.
