Weekly Garden Thread - November 21-27,2020
November 21, 2020 | Diana in Wisconsin/Greeneyes

Posted on 11/21/2020 6:48:02 AM PST by Diana in Wisconsin

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.

This thread is non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.

NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

Are you able to get dried cranberries where you are? Or order them online?

It would take some pre-planning, but it would be possible to soak the dried cranberries and use them to make sauce.

This year I’m thankful God wired me to be the weird, plant-obsessed, self-sufficiency-obsessed, crazy person in my family.

When there wasn’t an egg to be found in any store, my chickens kept us supplied. We didn’t even realize there was an egg shortage until Mom posted a picture of her deviled eggs on FB, and every comment was “where are you finding eggs right now?!”

Some of my online friends haven’t been able to find canned pumpkin for months. We have 3 bins full of squash in the basement.

The canning lid shortage got interesting, but I had been buying a box or two anytime I saw them on sale, for years now. It sometimes took a while for me to remember where they were hidden, but we didn’t run out.

We probably have enough dry beans to last a year or more, thanks to the bumper crop from my garden this year.

I’m not saying any of this to brag. It’s just that, it’s like I’m finally getting a hint of WHY God wired me this way. After so many years of being the freak. There’s no way to put into words how that feels.

A white Christmas table......accented w/ your mercuried pieces, silver baubles,
crystal stemware, and white tapers. White dinnerware can be bought inexpensively.

All in all...... a nice respite from the triteness of red and green.

You are one of the smartest, determined and most interesting people I know (in real life!) and, IMHO, you should never doubt yourself.

It really IS wonderful when you can find your passion and run with it. It took me a long time to figure that out; glad you’re finding it when you’re young enough. :)

My ‘good china’ is white with a silver rim, so that would be perfect. :)

I’m hitting Dollar Tree next week, LOL! I have gold plate chargers ($1 each!) which looked terrific for last Thanksgiving, but if I can find silver, that would be awesome.

Perfect china...........and if you cant find silver chargers,
......I have seen large silver paper doilies in stores....they’d look so elegant.

And with an application of bonemeal to the spring bulbs, my gardening season is finished. On to Christmas decorating! I am going heavily on the red and gold this year.

I still have greens in the greenhouse, but I’m winding things down, too.

Bringing out the ‘Christmas Decor’ today. I want to get my Creche set up in the Dining Room. The Living Room can wait for a bit, and it takes me a few days to get ‘Santa Hats’ on ALL of Beau’s wall-mounted animals, LOL!

Amazingly, I only have TWO Rubbermaid Tubs of ‘decor.’ I’ve really ‘weeded’ it down to just my very favorite things, now.

I already have lights up and my lighted reindeer and a flag, so aside from some fresh greens in buckets and a wreath, outside is DONE. This warm fall has been awesome!

BTW......(you probably already know).

Those styrofoam Christmas tree shapes are dirt cheap.

You could buy several sizes, take them home, and go crazy gluing on feathers, silver ribbon........whatever.

Ya-Hooooo! Another full WEEK of sunny and cool - no rain, no SNOW. More hope for RIPE Cherry-type tomatoes in the unheated greenhouse! It's in the mid-40's right now, and was hitting 83 in the greenhouse, so I cracked the door for the next 2 hours - when the sun starts going down. It is now officially 'dark' here each day about 4:30pm. :(

Tomorrow I put away the fall decor and clean the house. Sunday I get a start on the Christmas stuff. Gotta get the Advent wreath on the table before supper time! Lutherans, ya know.
