- WTH powers that thing,, rechargeable AA batteries??? - Just did some checking. It looks like the Tesla battery pack uses cells a bit larger than AA.
The 85 kWh battery pack contains about 7100 cells.

The original Tesla battery packs consist of numerous 18650 Litium ion batteries...18mm diameter x 65 mm long.
Tesla/Panasonic patented a new cell, larger with a greater capacity, but the require sophisticated thermal monitoring and cooling to prevent runaway thermal events. Don't know if they are in real world use at this point.
