That is rather easy to do. When the sender logs in or connects to the receiver there is a record. On an email it is in the header. Basically, they can trace the IP address.
I have not had the chance to watch the news conference. Given all the spin, I want to reserve judgment until I have time to watch it for myself. Frankly, my skepticism about all of this has been growing lately.
