The bird is an adult male Saw-whet owl, one of the tiniest owls
NEW YORK (AP) — It wasn’t quite a partridge in a pear tree, but a worker helping set up the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree found a holiday surprise — a tiny owl among the massive branches.
The little bird, now named what else but Rockefeller, was discovered on Monday, dehydrated and hungry, but otherwise unharmed, said Ellen Kalish, director and founder of the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in Saugerties, New York, where the bird was taken.
Kalish said the bird is an adult male Saw-whet owl, one of the tiniest owls. It was taken to a veterinarian on Wednesday and got a clean bill of health.
“He’s had a buffet of all-you-can-eat mice, so he’s ready to go,” she said.
She said the plan was to release the owl back to the wild this weekend.
The tree, a 75-foot Norway spruce, had been brought to Manhattan on Saturday from Oneonta, New York, in the central part of the state. The tree is put in place and then decorated over some weeks before being lit for the public in early December.
No, I want him. He is precious.
Saw that tree.....Downright PITIFUL, IMO.
It’s the only Owl I’ve ever heard, so I id’d it as an ‘owl’.................
When the lock down hit in March we had two owls strutting about on our community basketball court here in Florida. It was interesting to see how fast wildlife reclaims space when there are no humans around.
“Pretty easy to identify by their call.”
In the modern era they use cell phones and text messaging.
I didn’t know that detail was in the painting.
Thanks for that info! I have an interest in birds, and hadn't heard that.
Ping!
Do you enjoy your new home? Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Merry Christmas, Tiny Owl!
these are cool looking awls - i think screech owls are small too?
Yep, we’ve got one too. Seen it once and hear it often. Based on the character of its call, did a little on-line research and believe it to be a Great Horned Owl. Sooo cool to hear in the dark of night. Sometimes loud enough to hear it INSIDE the house so it’s close by....
It’s not true! I’m right here!
almost the same size- think the Saw-whet has it beat slightly though-
Never forget the movie my cousin vinnie, where pecci (sp?) went to country to ‘sleep’- and got woken by the horrendous sound of a screech owl- camera goes to the tree and you see this tiny little owl- Very funny scene-
Love that movie!.....................
OPUS:
Fame is going to my head. For the first time, I realize that I am very important and no longer must be encumbered by a reflective, humble and arduous rational thought process. Realizing that, I realize that my hidden destiny and purpose has been to make sure that human beings act in accordance with my new enlightened vision, by force if necessary, for their own good. You have all been wonderful friends but I have graduated to a higher level of consciousness now and bid you farewell for I realize that I must now show you what terrible people you all are, racist and deplorable chumps, and I shall go find a new home with my new people, the democrats, inheritors of the glorious mantles of Mao and Pot and Stalin who went before them.
Now you know why FReepers say my posts are for the birds.
Yep us too- Watch it every couple of years- still laugh to this day at soem of the scenes=- all the characters were just about perfect in that movie- even the lawyer for the kids- the first lawyer, the one that stuttered- can’t think of his name- - Have seen him in a couple of movies now- He’s a quite funny actor-
My favorite part:
The Magic Grits courtroom scene............
