I agree - the whole idea of the “rental culture” is that while giving the illusion of convenience they have people living without ownership of actual property (including goods). Detached single-family homes and personal vehicles have been in the sites of the elites for a long time; this virus has disrupted their plans for both as people realize how much control over their daily lives they’ve lost in big cities.
Hurricane Sandy was a great lesson for people in self-reliance here in the NYC metro area; I’d imagine Hurricane Katrina was the same along the Gulf Coast. Much of the frustration you see with young adults today is because they don’t remember those situations; with empty supermarket shelves and job disruptions they are learning them - and they are learning they don’t want to live in the new housing designed for childless drones stacked on top of each other.
