I’ll join you in a prayer, then off to bed. Hoping to see a huge throng of patriots turn out tomorrow. I’ll be praying for their safety.
Know your Nautical terminology
great circle
A great circle, also known as an orthodrome, of a sphere is the intersection of the sphere and a plane that passes through the center point of the sphere. A great circle is the largest circle that can be drawn on any given sphere. Any diameter of any great circle coincides with a diameter of the sphere, and therefore all great circles have the same center and circumference as each other.
small circle
All circles of a sphere which are not great circles are small circles. The plane described by a small circle will be parallel to the plane of one, and only one, great circle.
In the geographic coordinate system on a globe, the parallels of latitude are small circles, with the Equator the only great circle. By contrast, all meridians of longitude, paired with their opposite meridian in the other hemisphere, form great circles.
Understanding circles of a sphere and how they apply to different charts is key to understanding open ocean and celestial navigation.
