King County Reports My Drop Box Ballot Has Been Received, Signature Verified, and Counted
Vanity | 02 November 2020

Posted on 11/02/2020 4:27:41 PM PST by zeestephen

I live in King County (Seattle). We have had 100% Mail In or Voter Drop Box elections in Washington state for more than 10 years. It is helpful that King County tracks our ballots from the day mailed, to delivery (not sure how that is traced), to reception, verification, and counting. I think this is the first time my ballot has been counted BEFORE the election. In past elections, we are usually still counting two weeks AFTER the election.

They’re counting early so they’ll have plenty of time to cook up some additional ballots if the race is close.

Re: Surprised at voting straight Democrat

We actually had one election where we could see a photocopy of our own ballot, and what time it was counted.

Apparently, that created serious security and privacy issues, and they have not done that again.

Your chad was hung so unfortunately we cannot count it. Try again in 4 years if we have not already been annexed by Venezuela

One needs a certain element of trust when voting and unfortunately I have none.

In a purple state, there would be a Republican and a Democratic observer. But Washington State? Won’t be surprised if they throw ballots from a certain zip code into the dumpster.

I also live in King County, and made a similar comment on Facebook a week ago. A friend pointed out RCW 29A.40.110 which apparently gives them the right to open and count ballots prior to election day.

I will DM you a link to the post.

And for 10 years we haven’t had a close election. Before that we did.

I THINK only your ballot has been counted....your votes have not.

Re: Won’t be surprised if they throw ballots from a certain zip code into the dumpster.

They probably do not throw away ballots in my Congressional District.

Four years ago, my incumbent Democrat Congressman got reelected with 75% of the vote.

His only opponent - from the Socialist Party - got 25% of the vote!

When Inslee instigated mail-in voting, a few Freepers in Seattle went to observe ballot counting. It was reasonably fair. The system has been in place for many years and has a good chance of still being fair.

States that have not had that much practice can really bleep up. Go watch ballots being counted. Observe, photograph, report.;

No chain-of-custody.

There is no telling what happened to that ballot on its journey from Point A to Point B.

Re: Elections may be reasonably fair in King County

On the King County election website, they actually have live video coverage of every element of ballot handling.

Of course, there is still no way to be certain that there is no fraud, but they do make a sincere effort keep the counting process as public as possible.

I’m glad you let us know this vanity because FReepers all over the world have been worried that your ballot had not been received. Now we can sleep sound tonight. Thanks for the alert.

Re: Thanks for the alert

I do appreciate the humor involved.

However, I think King County does have a fairly adequate system for honest Drop Box elections, and I think it might be a useful template for other states.

I really like Drop Box elections - mostly, because I can study the ballot at home on my own schedule - even though 100% of my candidate and ballot measure choices lose in every election!

Not everyone’s cup of tea, of course.

You can already study the ballot at home on your own schedule. Visit your county website or search online, or try https://ballotpedia.org/Sample_Ballot_Lookup to look up a sample ballot for exactly what yours will look like. Anyone can plan ahead what they’re planning on voting for before they head to the polls.
