The NBA, however, fears that starting the season even in January could cost the league anywhere from $500 million to $1 billion in lost revenue, according to ESPN.
Now, a multibillion dollar entity like the NBA might normally be able to weather losses even that substantive, if only for a year.

Things get a little hairier, however, when factoring in the great unknown of when fans will be allowed back en masse. Without that vital gate revenue, ESPN noted that projections have the NBA losing another $4 billion.
Thats a potential loss of up to $5 billion in revenue if the season starts in January and fans are not allowed to attend. That massive figure, even for a multibillion dollar entity, would be a very painful and bitter pill to swallow.
The Players Associations reluctance to start the season early is particularly confounding given the very dire consequences those revenue losses could have on the NBA players.
As ESPN pointed out, the current collective bargaining agreement includes a 50-50 revenue split between the players and the league. A massive drop in revenue would mean a steep drop in player salaries.
While some players with exorbitant salaries, such as LeBron James, John Wall and Chris Paul, would still collect a hefty chunk of change, players on rookie-scale deals or making the league minimum might not be as amenable to those depressed salaries.
So it as simple as going woke and then going broke?
Much like with anything else in life, no, its not that simple.
But at the very least, the NBA might want to significantly rethink its strategy of engaging in hyper-partisan politics and alienating its fans.

Warms my heart!
Eff ‘em. I hope the league burns to the ground.
Hope they collapse and fail. And never recover.
Dead to me forever.
Stop for a minute and think of the upcoming Olympics.
Will team USA have a political moment?
or, will they have learned something?
I’m at my mom’s house for dinner having so sit here watching the Woke NFL with the obnoxious fake fans screaming and the Twighlight zone looking empty seats. Formerly a Seahawk fan, now even they make me want to puke. Every so often they mention how players are “Standing up to systemic racism in our country” No BLM that I can see painted on the endzone but almost every commercial has some woke ass shit slanted message to it. I literally want to puke. I better put this away now, they keep staring at me.
These people won’t learn. They will blame revenue losses on COVID and, therefore, on Trump.
In my life time I have needed a doctor, a lawyer, a police officer, an electrician , a plumber and , of course the protection of fire fighters, EMTs and our military.
I have never needed a spoiled Hollywood degenerate, NFL football player or NBA basketball player for anything.
Plenty of kids will play hoops for $75K a year and would be just as entertaining.
Finally we get good news!!!
Oh no...hope I can sleep tonight... I would have thought the blm and leftists would have offset the revenue shortfall.../s
But the NBA can count on the support of China.
I think it is fair to say that they have alienated many fans for a generation or more.
The players in the NBA did not think this out very well. It is quite possible between social justice and Covid that they will take a bath on their salary. On top of that, so many fans have walked that their earning potential moving forward is much less because there is a cumulative impact in advertising dollars and ticket prices.
The NFL, MLB, and even Nascar also harmed their brands with this nonsense. Prior to all of this political theater sports were something we could just enjoy. Much of the blame for this also goes to ESPN and sports talk radio who have become a format for social justice and leftist ideology. I think most of the staff of ESPN are full-on communists.
The left ruins everything. I am not watching.
And nascar
No way - they saddled this horse & now they need to ride it right into the perdition they have so justly earned.
The Oakland and the ftb lost tax money on 8 games played in Oakland. Oh and ya the ftb gets tax money when faiders play la chargers
/heavy sarc
At this rate Marvel might someday buy the NBA....
Not only less money going to people who hate us. But what about those who furnish their bling? Gonna cut sales on gold teef grilles, Bentley’s, their tastefully decorated cribs, and custom clothes. Will also be less money for a lot of these baby daddies and their harems. My heart just bleeds to witness this./s
