I got out my key and it was covered with dust. I think I am too rusty for CW, but I have my radio tuned to 7.250 lower side band. I will give it a try on 40 m. Good Hunting from.... Varmint Al WB6YNM

I live in a neighborhood with an HOA and can’t have a permanent antenna, but I can operate portable...

I run a Chameleon MPAS system with a 17ft whip and ground radial, it gets the job done....I can put it up in 10-15 minutes and tune in 20m, 40m, 80m etc.....

Sorry to ask newb question but you guys sound like you really know what you’re doing.

Can a handheld like the Baofeng radios be useful in a total urban setting like NYC in a grid down situation?

/asking for a friend...

Sure, your range will be less but it will still work...I have 4 Baofeng UV-5rs, and a upgraded Yaesu HT....I’ve tested them up to 3 miles away with no issues.....

I have two HF radios than call also do local repeaters using the 2m and 70cm radio bands....put up a decent antenna and my range would be greatly increased....

I’ve tested my base HF radio on repeaters up to 25-30 miles away with no problems....

My advice, get a couple of cheap Baofengs and program them up and listen....learn about the repeaters in the area and get them programmed and listen...you can’t transmit legally without a license..
