US President Donald Trump’s administration has reportedly approved the sale of advanced F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jets to Israel, Asharq Al-Awsat reported Friday.

The Move said to come as part of efforts to maintain Israel’s qualitative military edge in the region after UAE is all set to get F-35’s from the US.

According to the report, the announcement was made by US Defense Secretary Mark Esper during his recent visit to Israel.

The US government also purportedly gave its nod to the selling of precision-guided munitions to the Israel Defense Forces.

On Tuesday, Haaretz reported that Israel sought to procure F-22 Raptors to maintain its qualitative military edge in the middle east region.

The US reportedly rejected Israel’s previous requests to acquire the Raptors despite showing interest in the aircraft on multiple occasions.

The US government is yet to officially announce the move. As of now, The F-22 cannot be exported under US federal law to protect its stealth technology and classified features.

There are 100 or so F-22’s that aren’t “combat coded”. My guess is that all of those will go back to Lockheed-Martin to be rebuilt as a later Block-version and transferred to Israel.

No. The production line does not exist. The tools, jigs and fixtures may exist, but the supplier network & the workforce are gone or working on other projects — like the F-35.

Avionics is heavily integrated in 5th Gen and part of the overall stealth package. I would imagine that it will be difficult for the Israelis to take their traditional approach with mods. They’ll probably do it, but it will take years.

They left Hawaii headed to South Korea/Japan. Had to form up on their escorting tanker to make it back to Pearl-Hickam because the Nav systems crashed.

Another item that never gets qualified. The Syrian S-400 radars can paint Israeli aircraft flying inside Israel’s own airspace where the Israeli F-35’s are likely mounting radar reflectors for safety purposes. Plus, they never say if the radars receive a targeting lock. If the detection radar happens to illuminate a stealth aircraft that does not necessarily translate to a radar-lock that would be required to stear a missile to the area. And it there’s no guarantee that the missiles terminal radar can take-over and complete the kill.

This is all spy vs. spy stuff that never gets verified until the balloon goes up and everybody has to lay their cards on the table face-up.

Most what I write on this thread are for those less educated on FMS processes.

F-22 blue-screen-of-death. . .you are correct, just jumping ahead wrongly.

Alas, its the Syerian S-400 system you are thinking about which have been run against in Syria. Israelis stay well clear of the Tartus Naval base where the RUSSIAN manned S-400 and S-500 systems are located.

The Russians wouldn’t shoot them down in any case.

Another fine idea mauled by mundane facts. I do get the sense though that remedial legislation could ease difficulties aside so as to make F-22 sales possible.

Yes, as long as they can afford the billion dollar cost to change the software.
Japan has always wanted the F-22, since (from my knowledge) 2007.
Who knows but if we and them want to make the sale, and congress agrees, it will happen.

Spread out over enough aircraft, a billion dollar charge is not prohibitive. Then again, the F-35 is developing into a potent warfighter and may be enough for Israel and Japan.

We can’t buy more Raptors but Lockheed can build more?

How does that work?
