Hard freeze here last
That will kill off everything needed, and the by Wed it’s supposed to bounce back to the 50’s and near 60 in some locations.
Last week for the farmer’s market. Sigh. I invested in an indoor grow light. We were so cloudy the past two weeks the oregano and rosemary I moved indoors are absolutely miserable. I’ll see what they look like in a week.
My Christmas cactuses are loaded with growing buds. My big one should be in full bloom by Thanksgiving and the little one in early December. Here’s hoping they do their usual and I get blooms thought mid January. Last year I got blooms as late as April.
Is there a trick to getting a Christmas cactus to bloom? I’ve had one for several years now and it’s never bloomed. It’s very healthy and its arms grow ever longer (should they be trimmed?) but no blooms. Does it need particular conditions or supplements? Thanks!
Hi there, a good, sunny window and a little water once a week does the trick for me. In bloom they get a little more water. You can try trimming it back. My large one is in the dirt it came in. I keep mine in kocedama balls. Maybe the moss helps.
Well what do you know! Seems I’ve got a (non-blooming) Thanksgiving cactus.
So I went out and gathered a few dozen I found under the snow, like these below.
But thanks be to God for literally hundreds of tomatoes, despite challenges.
Here is a quick condensed compilation of the season, from prep to planting to produce to blight to substantial recovery to the end of the season and final harvest:

Mine, too! I have one - a peach color, that I’ve had for 10+ years. I call her my, ‘Halloween Cactus.’ She should be blooming in a few days.
Now - I’ve got to get some Amaryllis on order and started!

Itnis a sunny but coldish day here in the PNW.....
It is the anniversary of the assasination of one of my co-workers.
Every Halloween I remember him. This evening will be my 1st day back at work and I will be working the protests so wish me and my co-workers luck and prayers that the recent shooting in Vancouver will not cause some protester where I work to get violent.
Fall garden is doing great.
My 16’ x 4’ raised bed with hoop cover is going gangbusters.
I shpuld have peppers and eggplants into December....especially of ai put the 2md layer of plastic over it and get a full 3 zones upgrade.

I dumped out my sweet potato growing bag (3 lb size bag) which only had 2 large sweet potatoes and a ton of little slips.
I started it with a tiny hunk of a sweet potato with eyes on it about 4.5 months ago.
I replanted the slips in a protected raised bed that is beneath aome cedar trees. Will wait to see how they handle that spot.
Will eat those 2 big one later this week.
And an FYI.....when my wife is worried about anything she goes into full nesting/cleaning mode.
She has been cleaning and rearranging the house for the past 5 days because she is worried about me returning to work before the election.
I think she is down to cleaning out the inside of the bottles of countertop cleaner tonite if she continues at this pace.
Only way to deal with it is to stay put of the way. My 19 y.o. son has barricaded himself in his room and I am going to take a nap in the basement before I have to get ready for work.
The surprise snow and freeze really clobbered me! I have a pvc water system from the house to our flower beds, garden and duck coop. Well, the freeze last night (18 degrees!) caused the manifold by the coop to shatter. I will have to rebuild it, next spring.
The water system is shut off and drained, anyway. Now to run the heated hose out to the coop.
This winter %#&$ could have waited a month!
Barb and I harvested the herbs last night in the dark. Good thing we did.
I was also hoping for more frost free days but yesterday here on the coast south of Boston, we got a coating of snow so today I picked a couple of red tomatoes from my 4x4' garden and brought them in for food. The end of the season for me. -Tom
