Nebraska's messy marriage with Big Ten getting uglier every day

On a Thursday morning conference call, Big Ten presidents discussed an exemption request from Nebraska to allow the Cornhuskers to replace Saturday’s canceled football game against Wisconsin with a non-league opponent, the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.

It got zero traction, league sources told Yahoo Sports. There was no need for even a show of hands, let alone an actual vote. No one was in favor of granting it. The league’s previously agreed-upon rules — conference games only — was reaffirmed.

Also reaffirmed was the belief around the Big Ten that Nebraska, even after nine years of membership, remains a difficult philosophical fit for the league. The Huskers’ request was met with knowing eye-rolls … of course it would be Nebraska that is already trying to rewrite the protocols everyone agreed to just last month in an effort to get a 2020 season played.

When Nebraska joined the Big 10 = 14 they lost their talent pipeline from Texas. They are just like Iowa with more pedigree. But I am sure the Nebraska administrators appreciate cashing the huge checks from the Big 10 = 14.

Nebraska being in the Big 10 makes more sense than Rutgers. At least a little bit...

Many of the Big Ten schools have their ‘roots’ in being agricultural schools, and I think that Nebraska fits into the Big Ten better than, say, Rutgers or Maryland.

Yeh, Nebraska’s DNA is in the Big 12. Osborne got his panties in a wad because Texas and Oklahoma wasn’t showing him the respect he thought he was entitled to so jumped to the Big 10. University of Nebraska hasn’t done squat since. As others have stated Nebraska can’t compete without Texas high school talent.

Barry Alvarez and Wisconsin is the real bad actor here, btw. Their infections are below the threshold that would require them to cancel the game yet they are canceling it anyway. Why? Because they would have to use their 3rd or 4th string QB and might lose. They’re counting on a cancellation being better than a loss.

University of Maryland is one of those schools that have every kind of college from law, to medicine, to veterinarian, to agriculture. Kind of like the University of Missouri. It’s their location that keeps them from looking like the have agriculture and veterinary.

Same story with Arkansas. It’s been a lot longer since they left the old Southwest conference, but when they did they lost the Texas talent and have become irrelevant ever since. I guess the SEC checks they are cashing makes the beatings they suffer worth it to them.

The problem for both is there’s nowhere else to go. The Big 10 already admitted 2 schools in their last round of expansion that most fans of the Big 10 think were lousy additions because they’re just not competitive in football and likely never will be. At least those two schools brought a significant population base into the conference footprint. That meant eyeballs on tv screens and at least some football talent to recruit.

Nebraska has neither....but at least it is a brand name in football. Their history of greatness is a lot more recent than say, Michigan’s. Its impossible to think of any other school that has a sports pedigree, an academic pedigree and a large population base that would accept a Big 10 offer. So they’re stuck.

For Nebraska, the SEC would not want them and the Big 12 wouldn’t take them back. Neither the ACC nor the PAC 12 would be interested and both are too far away. There is nowhere else to go so they’re stuck.

They should have stayed in the Big 12. They would be playing tomorrow if they did.

UConn is the American was a bad fit. With our football team as an independent and basketball in the Big East, it’s a better fit. 2021 schedule in Football is great..big name schools...

I think the Big 12 would take them back. There has been talk for a few years now of 3 or 4 super conferences (16 - 20 teams each) that will leave the NCAA and form their own organization. The Big 12 wants to be one of those conferences.

The reason why the Big 12 has not been successful in getting other schools to join is because the way that they share their revenue. Texas has the Longhorn network and they get all of the money. There isn’t a Big 12 network that would be a source of revenue for the other schools.

The B1G should make teams forfeit if they don’t play. Otherwise, they get shenanigans like this...

I see that Trevor Lawrence got the Rona and won’t play this weekend.

This season is a farce.

Well, on the plus side, Maryland and Rutgers finally give IU a chance to escape the football cellar from time to time.

Even in a normal season, players get sick or injured. Star players are not exempt. And no one but a team’s fan base is going to be upset.

In fact, this change of events just made the Clemson/BC game more interesting...

The school/league that really seems crazy to me is West (by God) Virginia in the Big 12! The distances just seem too far to expect any WV fans at an away game.

“....West (by God) Virginia in the Big 12......”

Absolutely agree !

There are NO natural rivalries for WVU in the Big 12.
It was done purely for the TV revenue. I was told by a WVU official that that move at a minimum doubled their TV revenue. The quote “We could lose every game and we would still double our TV revenue.”

Unfortunately what made a move necessary was the dying of the Big East as a football conference. WVU probably should be in the ACC. There was a rumor when this was happening that WVU tried to get in the ACC but the ACC wouldn’t take them.

Hopefully when colleges and universities are defunded we won’t have worry about this trivial crap anymore.
