High fat or 'ketogenic' diets could prevent, reverse heart failure (yes, reverse heart damage!)
MedicalXPress/Saint Louis University ^ | Oct 26, 2020 | Maggie Rotermund/Kyle S. McCommis, Ph.D.

Research from Saint Louis University finds that high fat or "ketogenic" diets could completely prevent, or even reverse heart failure caused by a metabolic process.

In an animal model, drastic heart failure in mice was bypassed by switching to high fat or "ketogenic" diets, which could completely prevent, or even reverse the heart failure.

"Thus, these studies suggest that consumption of higher fat and lower carbohydrate diets may be a nutritional therapeutic intervention to treat heart failure," McCommis said.

"Interestingly, this heart failure can be prevented or even reversed by providing a high-fat, low carbohydrate "ketogenic" diet," McCommis said. "A 24-hour fast in mice, which is also "ketogenic" also provided significant improvement in heart remodeling."

Diets with higher fat content, but enough carbohydrates to limit ketosis also significantly improved heart failure in mice lacking cardiac MPC expression.

"Our study reveals a critical role for mitochondrial pyruvate utilization in cardiac function, and highlights the potential of dietary interventions to enhance cardiac fat metabolism to prevent or reverse cardiac dysfunction and remodeling in the setting of MPC-deficiency," McCommis said.Ongoing studies will seek to uncover the importance of ketone body versus fate metabolism in this process of improved cardiac remodeling.

Listen dummy, when you're obese and eat wtf you want and you start CUTTING OUT of your diet a ton of processed shit, then you will lose weight because of the CALORIE reduction.
Keto or not.

His good test results are not necessarily because of keto, but because he lost weight thanks to cutting out a lot calories.
You don't have to consciously COUNT CALORIES to understand if you only eat specific food groups, to know you're going to lose weight.

You calorie restrict yourself because your appetite restricts itself.

Eating carbs makes you stay hungry throughout the day. Eating fat and protein fills you up for a long time.

Case in point, I now go about 18 hours before I now make myself eat (I’m not hungry) which, once I get started, is a good meal and a later snack (I take my vitamins and minerals separate from my antioxidants and need to occasions of fat to best absorb them).

You’re the DUMMY, name caller.

It is NOT caloric restriction, it is CARB restriction.

You sound like the expert on obesity, but NOT on keto.

Try it, some time. You just might find, you’ll lose what you need.

Interesting. We tried making dough like that before and I couldn’t get the consistency and melt quite figured out. Probably should use fresh mozzarella instead of pre-shredded.

I did make my wife some cinnamon rolls before and she said she liked them, but I felt like it was just a bit too chunky.

Maybe I’ll give it another try. The wife has some low carb bake mix too and just said she’d try to make a pretzel out of it.

Thank you for the suggestion.

OMG you called me CLUELESS first.

Are you too thick to understand that the person I was talking to lost over 100 pounds meaning they were obese?
Meaning they pretty much ate a massive amount of food with little restriction if any?

If you go VEGAN, LOW FAT, KETO you will get the same results because in the end if you go from eating tons of food to cutting out certain foods and drinks you will have a natural CALORIE reduction causing WEIGHT LOSS.

WTH are you too dense to get about that?

Did I say Keto counts calories? But the diet is restrictive which will AUTOMATICALLY keep a person's caloric intake lower than usual. FACT!

THE ONLY WAY YOU LOSE WEIGHT IS TAKING IN LESS ENERGY THAN YOU BURN OFF WHATEVER THE HELL DIET YOU ARE ON!

There is also keto pizza mix available. That might work.

Yes....getting the mozzarella and cream cheese melt consistency right, can be a bit tricky.

Certainly the easiest diet to know what you can and can’t eat. Keep it under 20 net carbs for two weeks, then you can up them a smidge if you want (30ish or so). The lower you keep them, the better you do. Other than that, no calorie restrictions. Have a three egg omelet with four strips of bacon if you want.

Take total carbs, subtract fiber carbs, then subtract sugar alcohol (for sugar free candy) to get your net carb. It’s right there on the label.

Be VERY careful with the sugar alcohol though. You pop more than a couple sugar free peppermint patties and your stomach will mutiny on you.

The first book by Atkins was a very quick and easy read.

Biggest challenge is that you pretty much have to make it a “lifestyle”. You go off on a binge, it can be very hard to jump back on the wagon, and the weight can come back fast.

Read up on it first. Even ask your doc if you want. I don’t for sure know the health benefits or risks. But you DO lose weight fast.

It wasn’t the cheese, it was the crackers and bread you put it on.

You have to watch the dairy in the US. Almost all grocery store bought milk now is hyper-processed, fat is removed from all forms (even whole fat), to make skim milk. The fat is then pureed and then RE-ADDED back to the milk for 1%, 2% and “whole fat” versions.

The theory is that this processing alters how your body digests the lactose leading to sugar spikes and such which wouldn’t normally occur with regular, non-processed, whole fat milk with the sugars still in the fat.

I had a local dairy that my local grocery sold as a “boutique” milk that was non-homogenized and sold whole. The difference between that and any other milk jug was night and day.

Keto is not actually restrictive in that the high fat content is also high calorie. There is no calorie restriction. You simply replace the carb calories with fat calories.

The reason this works is that carbs become glucose while fat becomes ketones. Carbs spike insulin and fat does not.

Fat also spikes satiation hormones where carbs to the opposite.

If you are obese and start Keto you will automatically have a caloric drop and therefore lose weight.

High fat is usually not that high in calorie. An 8oz serlion steak is a lot less calories than slice of cheesecake.

“but enough carbohydrates to limit ketosis”

How is that limit set and measured?

You do NOT have a caloric drop. In fact, I was restricting calories to about 800-1100 a day. Logging it, every damned thing I put in my mouth. Stayed fat.

Went keto, calories went up to 1300-1800 a day. Lost weight. A1C went down to 5.7. No longer clinically diabetic.

An 8 oz ribeye is approximately 54 grams of fat and 650ish calories. Add a big salad with 3 T of olive oil and salt for dressing and you have another 41 grams of fat and 358 calories. That’s 1008 calories right there. One meal.

Have a salad with 6 oz of grilled chicken and avocado with olive or avocado oil for lunch and you have another 82 grams of fat and 1017 calories.

NOT calorie restricted, but very keto AND you lose weight.

***”Insulin is the culprit and the way you control insulin is to cut out carbs in the diet”***
You are 100% Correct! There is No Such Thing as an Essential Carbohydrate
It is easy... cut the Carbs ... well almost I still want Linguine with Clam Sauce but I’d have to drive to San Diego to get it (I’m in South Texas) so it is easy for me
