350K debit cards for unemployment benefits frozen in California over fraud fears, officials say

Faced with a deluge of fraudulent unemployment claims, California officials said Thursday that 350,000 of the debit cards they issued containing benefits have been frozen because of suspicious activity, including a high number of claims at a single address.

The debit cards frozen by the state Employment Development Department and Bank of America could represent billions of dollars in benefits paid out since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March.

“The Department’s top priority is to quickly verify the identity of any claimants in this group that may have been impacted by scammer attacks, while we work to shut down the potentially fraudulent claims,” the agency said in a statement Thursday.

The scope of the potential fraud has alarmed some state officials. But Assemblyman David Chiu (D-San Francisco) said he is also concerned that people in desperate need of unemployment benefits are also seeing their valid claims held up.

California is a stupid-ass state. I applied for unemployment benefits years ago when I was laid off from my 30+ year job during the Obama administration. I am now long past that point, currently getting a small pension in retirement now, and the bank they issued the debit card for keeps sending me notifications of my monthly balance (which has been ZERO for years).

Calls to the bank and California Unemployment to cancel this card gets me nowhere, particularly since I no longer file for taxes in the state, having moved to Texas in October 2018.

In the meantime our hardly working Cali governor has basically killed our Thanksgiving celebrations. He has high priorities:

California Gov. Newsom’s Thanksgiving Rules Explained as Severe Restrictions Put in Place
NewsWeek ^ | 10/22/2020 | Soo Kim

“Gatherings are defined as social situations that bring together people from different households at the same time in a single space or place. When people from different households mix, this increases the risk of transmission of COVID-19,” the CDPH said in a statement.

All gatherings must include no more than three households, including hosts and guests, and must be held outdoors, lasting for two hours of less.

Masks must stay on after eating and drinking!

Singing and shouting “strongly discouraged” “do so quietly (at or below the volume of a normal speaking voice),” and wear a face covering while engaged in the activity

“Seating must provide at least 6 feet of distance.

No, the above is not a Babylon Bee article.

We had $576 million in unemployment payment fraud here in Washington state.

Local news media have basically ignored the story.

I assume most of the money came from Washington D.C. because almost no one in Washington state seems upset about it.

Our Democrat governor and Democrat Attorney General are both up for reelection this year.

Both of them are favored to win, in spite of their incomprehensible negligence.

I wonder how many folks had the cards sent to their current work address to hide them from their familes.

WHY debit cards? Why not direct deposits into bank accounts?

The state has no right to track HOW that unemployment money is spent.

Debit cards would allow that.

Meanwhile, Nevada still hasn’t been paying people, and multiple lawsuits are now flying.

Friend filed in late March-—hasn’t seen a peny.
