RATT's STEPHEN PEARCY Reacts To MIKE SHINODA's Comment That 'Hair Metal' Felt Like 'Very White Music'

In a new interview with Metal Hammer magazine, LINKIN PARK's Mike Shinoda spoke about how the band's debut album, "Hybrid Theory", which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, defied easy categorization and helped diversify metal's appeal beyond its core audience with its blend of hip-hop swagger, screaming, irresistible pop hooks and circuit-bending.

"At the time, if you asked somebody what they were listening to, they'd say... 'Rock. I listen to hip-hop. I listen to jazz,'" Shinoda said. "It wasn't until five years later they'd say, 'Everything.' 'Hybrid Theory' did some of that work. It was part of the progression towards breaking down boundaries between styles of music.

"I listened to 90% rap music, then I'd look at a lot of rock bands and I'd be like, 'There's something too white [about it],'" he continued. "That was one of the things that turned me off, especially hair metal. Hair metal felt like very white music, and I was growing up in a very diverse city, so I didn't gravitate to it. That didn't resonate with me. And it wasn't just about race. I don't mean the color of skin. I just mean the culture of it. When nu metal started at the very beginning, it was a very diverse place."

One musician who quickly reacted to Shinoda's comments is Stephen Pearcy, frontman for 1980s California rockers RATT, widely considered one of the most successful acts of the Sunset Strip glam metal scene. Pearcy tweeted out a link to Mike's "Hair metal felt like very white music" quote, and he included the following message: "Lol, Didnt know rock music had a race. wtf, I didn't know what hair metal felt like. Thanks. all music to me"

I believe EVERY band of the hair metal era were primadonnas. Still listened to them, some I still listen to today, even RATT.

Metallica did the same - first two albums would melt your face off (Mustaine influence IMHO). Third, get your ears warm. After that, trash.

I liked Barry White music

In a slow, deep voice, "Baby...Baby...please come back to me!"

“Ratt now plays for insurance commercials (Ratt Problem in the kitchen).”

In the ad, that RATT band really is “a thing”? I thought it was just something made up for the commercial. (Never hear of RATT before.)

I got clarification from my brother. He opened for Ratt *twice*. The first show was great and the Ratt members were friendly; everyone hobknobbed backstage and had a great time. Pearcy was no longer in Ratt.

The second show several years later was completely different. Pearcy was back with Ratt, and insisted on weird things (related via his roadies) like:

Don't go near our guitars.
Don't mill about back stage.
Don't go near our dressing rooms.
Get lost or fade into the woodwork during the after-show meet & greet.
Get you equipment off-premise.

Brother put his foot down on the last demand to which the reply was "Well, put it on your tour bus.", which said "screw you, we don't have a bus, we're a local band. The event promoter knows us personally."

I can’t rank Frank’s awareness of contemporary bands or musicians but Warren Cuccurullo and Terry Bozzio were also in Duran Duran and Missing Persons. A band is a gig for a working musician.

He’d worked with session musicians and studio bands (as a writer and producer in the early and mid 60s). At a point he could probably see some things others might not and give them a tryout. He certainly was a fan of the old music companies that may not have understood contemporary music but they were willing to throw it against the wall and see what sticks.

Roger Corman originally wanted Rock N Roll High School to be a movie called Disco High. When his younger New World protégées asked him which movie he’d see/avoid based on the title, the Joe Dante and the sort said “that’s why it has to be Rock’n’Roll High School to draw the young audiences”.

Lou Reed was a primadonna

Little Richard was a primadonna

Nothing new in the business about that
