Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

“If you didn’t sign it, I’ll never know who it was from!...”

The license plate will be a dead giveaway.

The visitor came, and I over-talked. I have a tendency to do that when I haven’t seen a real person for a while.

I’d be happy to see your sunflower!

Cousin Douglas isn’t coming. His lungs are playing up. It sounds like he has COPD (emphysema in the old days) and has to turn around and go back. But I was right. He want to come and take the journal and in exchange, give me photos I already have.

Well, that’s okay, then. I’m sorry he’s sick, and also kind of sorry that he couldn’t have planned to visit you just to say Hi.

DP and Tom went shopping and I think out to lunch. I had a lie-down. Jake is mad because Tom and I gave him his flea drops.

In an hour or so, I need to go to Walmart and pick up my ankle pills.

I HAD told him that I was transcribing it, and if he had asked me for the journal when I was done, I would have agreed. In fact, I think I mentioned it in the beginning. He had no idea a journal even existed, until I told him so.
I think greed got the better of him.

If he had told me the real reason for his trip, I could have saved him time and money. As it was, it was sneaky and rude. Assuming I would just hand it over to him took a lot of popcorn.

But the thing is over with now, and I’ve offered to send him what few pages I’ve transcribed, and he may or may not accept them. But ohwell.

I’m still in kind of a miserable dip because of Deceptive Douglas, but AMMWS: All’s well that ends.

Cats get so pouty when they get flea drops and hairball stuff.

Jake is nervous about Tom because he is so large and loud.

I think it’s all a win, since you didn’t want a visitor anyway. Now you can forget about it.

You’re absolutely right about all of it! Done and dusted, as they say!

One of the little dogs here is nervous around me because I wear a peaked hat with a visor. She barks at me every time she sees me. So yeah...cats around large and loud? They aren’t too happy.

You’ll probably be doing family things for the rest of the day, so I’ll just go pretend my schedule isn’t changing. Ha-ha! I hope you have a good evening and that you sleep well tonight!

The breakfast floof is cute and squeeful!

Good morning.

I hope you had a pleasant evening and that you slept well.

I had some disturbing dreams, but I managed to stay in bed and go back to sleep in spite of them!

More and more the las couple of months, I haven’t felt up to showering. I’ve forced myself for the sake of other people, but today is another of those days. I’m just too tired. But I’ll do it. Unngh

Good morning. Tom won at Wingspan, so he was happy. Usually Vlad wins. Vlad sold one of his cards yesterday for almost $40, which is about what he paid for the whole set. If he nets $10 more, he’ll have covered the cost plus tax and Tom’s gas.

Tom donated the gas and effort, since we’re supporting him until the end of the semester. He’s also going to teach Kathleen to swim when Physics is over.

Placido Domingo!

Those dogs are probably smaller than the kitten ;-).

I sat out on the cement patch for my prayers this morning, in a faint drizzle. We had various bird sounds, all very thematic, and then a bullfrog started croaking in the neighbors’ pool. God has a sense of humor ...

I’m too rude for this place. I’m going to go shower and see if it rains some sense into me!

Just a photo, so they’re not making any noise!

A shower would be nice, though. I’ll have one closer to time for church, in case I get an insane urge to clean something.

I vacuumed and told some number of children to, “Find something suitable to do with yourself!” way too many times already.

Oh. Yes. If they haven’t learned how to respond they may be in for a surprise not to their liking.

I hope your day improves!
