A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I woke up earlier than I wanted to this morning, and decided to just get up and open the doors to help keep the place cool so I don’t have such a monstrous utility bill.
Now all I want to do is sleep but there is so. much. to. be. done! And I don’t feel up to it. *whine-whine-whine*
I thought Jar-Jar was a joke. But yeah, you’re right. Nobody liked the character.
I didn’t mean to do it. It was there and no one else was around, so... my bad. again.
Some of your family members have always been on the fritz, T-c. But’s it’s unusual that they all want showers on a Friday AM.
It’s good when Vlad showers, but still ...
I added a hot water storage tank to my oil burner (heats the house too). I can run my dishwasher, clothes washer and take a shower at the same time and still have hot water. Surprisingly efficient too.
Nice! We have natural gas.
That would be true of any household with boys.
Or grown men who have never left puberty behind...
Very amusing, you too.
We’re back from a shopping excursion with mixed results. I found a paintbrush (half off), and we got some dinner ingredients (also discounted), but Your Local Game Store isn’t selling the cards Vlad wants until after 7:00 p.m. today.
Be here every day until Bingo starts... ;o]
The Lawn Guy is here, and I covered the windshield again as well as brought in my door mat. But he hasn’t mowed this side of the complex and he hasn’t blown off any debris, so I don’t know what he’s doing.
I think the light in my kitchen won’t be fixed today, so I’ll work on the pantry tomorrow. My day got stopped early this morning, so it’s just a day. Unngh.
Dinner could consist of another “Just Crack An Egg,” since that seems to be the only way I can fix eggs these days, with every other cooking method packed. I’d rather have a nice meal cooked by someone else.
I’m going to make lasagna, but first, naptime. Jake is getting anxious.
I’ll text Tom and see if he can take Vlad to Your Local Game Store tomorrow evening, since Pat will be at work.
Enjoy your nap!
Maybe afterwards, you can decide if the Lego box gets opened. ;o])
It was okay. *yawn*
Not ready for the Lego yet. I have an errand, and then have to make supper.
There’s always next week for the Legos.
Now I wish I were on my old schedule...it would let me go to bed in a little over an hour. But I am determined! I will work on changing my schedule until I can stay up when I need to until 2100 or so. I don’t know if I want to get up any later than 0400, but for me, it’s a good time. Maybe 0500 but for now, I’m good!
I’ll stay with it until something tells me I can’t!
Keep trying!
Yes ma’am! I can’t afford to revert back to the old ways. I mean, I’ve got a camping vacation with my BFF coming up and I have to be awake during the hours that it counts! LOL!
That’s the ticket! Think about the prize at the end!
Absolutely!
Speaking of prizes, it’s supposed to be 101° Sunday, but 110° by Wednesday. This little room A/C was not made to keep a place this size (small though it is) cool enough to live in in heat like that, so I’ll have to be very careful about the temperature I set it to. It’s old, and I don’t want to burn it up.
The swamp cooler is a no-no. I don’t know how people with arthritis can stand to use them. The few times a swamp cooler has been my only option, it’s nearly crippled me.
So it may come to a choice between being cool and being tolerable. (Now’s the time I wish I had that big ol’ roof top A/C in Henderson!)
