Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

I guess I can’t correctly say, “Happy Un-Friday Eve,” can I?

Kitteh has it covered! I’ve found it very difficult to start my day without a kitteh!

It’s all I can do to handle Baby Yoda. My clever creative niece in Idaho, Kara, made sure I had a Baby Yoda crochet pattern, but I suspect the Baby Yoda will be very, very old before I get around to making it. Projects are in a holding pattern in the order of importance, until I get moved, sadly. Others, well, they’ll just have to stay on the drawing board. So Baby Jar-Jar? I don’t think so!

It is warm and humid here today, but there will be nice air conditioning in Walmart when I get there.

I have emails to send regarding Day Camp.

Oh no no no. Billy Haley was NOT the originator not the best version of Shake Rattle and Roll.

For the version they wouldn’t play on the radio you must listen to Big Joe Turner https://youtu.be/Y9wTQsAgktg

Also if you listen to Blue Suede Shoes it must be the Carl Perkins version

And now to make my day I’m heading to the range!

I need to do something. I was looking for a piece of paper that had my late Unreal Brother’s birth information on it, and it took about 20 minutes. It wore me out, but I’m determined to get something done.

I will work on the Other Stuff filing. The sun is coming up over the mesa and will be shining into my eyes, soon... That ought to wake me up!

Good luck at Walmart! I’ve already sent emails. Well, one, anyway.

Walmart was a reasonable success. We got catsand and remembered the ice.

I’ve sent another email about Day Camp.

I guess laundry is next, then I’ll write something.

I got as much done as I could before I went for my errand but it wasn’t much. It just took a lot longer than I thought it would. Unngh.

I just barely walked in the door and got a text from Sharon, saying she was coming over. I had to clear a place on the sofa for her, but when she leaves, I’ll finish the job and get it cleared up, since it has to be done by Monday.

Speaking of which, I have to text Cousin Doug with my address, as it seems he doesn’t read emails. Or reads them selectively because I’ve sent him my address at least twice. I think.

Accomplished a trip to the library, the bank, and the vet.

Next will be naptime.

We did. Now I’m back with a little more energy. Pizza is planned for supper, so I don’t have to do anything about that.

Pest control came again. They were here barely two weeks ago. I never saw any critters until they sprayed and all of a sudden they are all over the place. I even have “sticky traps” under the kitchen sink and behind the toilet, and after a year, there was nothing in them. Until pest control sprayed. Then one critter in the bathroom.

At least I won’t be taking any with me that can still reproduce.

(Stinking mood swings.)

Still nothing from Chuck. I need to get finished packing up the kitchen, and that’s going to be tough without proper lighting.

The sofa did get semi-cleaned but I’m not happy with the amount of work that didn’t get done today. Maybe that’s why I fill so cruddy.

Things often seem not to get done here. I sent Frank up to bed when I found him lying on his face on the sofa.

It may thunderstorm again.

I just went over to talk to Chuck. He was in training all day yesterday, which is why his door was closed, but I guess he had to be there, rather than at home. He said it was a pain in the rear.

I told him about the cousin and the fact that I had never met him, and we’ve decided on a code, in case things start to go south. That’s a relief!

Also, pest control was back because of Rocky. I guess she doesn’t know that once the place is sprayed, the critters will come out to play, trying to escape. If she were cleaner to begin with, she wouldn’t have that problem. *shudder*

(Diatomaceous earth is my friend!)

Charlie’s copy of “The Replacements” came, so I opened it carefully and will put his letter inside it in the morning and then call him to give him a head’s up on it. I hope he enjoys it, because he sure sounded excited when I told him I could order it for him so he didn’t have to wait so long for TV airing. (I can’t believe he’s kept all my letters!)
