Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

See ya tomorrow. It has rained a bit here, but not much.

Or, you could choose the Kamchatka Peninsula. A great series is Nat Geo’s “Wild Russia.”

Chuck is in his 60’s with Parkinson’s but that doesn’t stop him from climbing up on all the roofs.

I’m excited about your Lego set!! Whee!! More photos! Almost like being there!

Now, I’m off to wash clothes.

I think I wrote about bears after watching videos of Kamchatka. Good luck with the wash!

My Lego set was last seen in Asheville on Saturday. “Pending,” it is.

I’m going to T.J. Maxx and Ross Dress for Less later on a quest for a new straw hat for summer camp.

Good luck on your hat quest!

Odd. I posted right after you posted the morning floof, but I shut the thing down and didn’t check to see if it had posted. So I read your next two posts when I get home and think, “Where’s the floof?” Then my inner furball said to look up. Sure enough!

Good morning, late!

The laundry room was cold and my bad, I forgot to turn the swamp cooler back on to “Low Cool,” though why it needs to be on that overnight is beyond me. It’s 67° outside, so they could have turned it to “Vent” and the wet excelsior would have kept the place cool for the duration.

The son FINALLY was able to open the attachment on the email but wanted to know why I sent it. Family related, involving Pioneers, and he wants to know why. Even his wife wanted to know why.

I want to know why life has to be so hard with those two! DANG!

Clever me, I don’t have to put clean sheets on the bed this morning, but I do have to hang the sleep shirts. In a few minutes. I’m also going to be as busy as possible, packing more stuff up. Staying home yesterday was a major help.

Good morning. Happy Monday!

I would like to just close my eyes and pretend it’s not here, but it’s here so I’ll make the best of it.

It’s still Monday here. I have a runny nose.

Should I clean the stove?

Tough call. The runny nose could make the cleanser you clean the stove with more irritating. On the other hand, if you don’t clean the stove then it will be the first thing facing you when you feel better.

Well, I haven’t done it yet. I mostly clean the stove with hot, soapy water.

Monday is here because it is not there. So pretend it’s like an un-birthday and make it an un-Friday. So, happy un-Friday, ArGee! ;o]

Got any 8’s?

Who else can clean the stove?

Here’s an oven cleaner recipe:

2 oz. of Dawn detergent
4 oz. of lemon juice
8 oz. of white vinegar
10 oz. of water

Spray on oven wall and racks, leave and hour or more and then rinse off.

I may buy some Dawn detergent just to clean this oven before I move out, since it wasn’t cleaned very well when I moved in. I like to surprise owners/managers. But don’t get me started!

Ah, yes! Retail therapy!

I have to leave in a few minutes for the pain clinic, then I’ll stop at Walgreen’s for at least one prescription. I think there is some nasal spray waiting for me, but I haven’t used it much since it was prescribed for my allergies. I don’t use it much.

Lin’s had some straw hats in multicolors, and even a not-quite-orange T-shirt for Hurricane.

I won’t even talk about the rest of my outing.

I got a tan hat. You can’t go wrong with tan.

Then I had a nap with Jake for almost 2 hours. I feel like I’ve been hit with a brick.

Lin’s had a turquoise hat, and if I had already been to Walmart for grocks, I might have been far more tempted than I was. But oh! I would love to have had that hat! Food was first, and that won’t happen until tomorrow.

I’m so sorry to hear you’re feeling a little poorly. Let’s hope it’s just a temporary thing, and that you recover with a good night’s sleep.

I think my problem today has also been the punies, but there’s not much I can do. I’m fighting nausea, and it’s probably stress-related. There is so much to get done before Friday, and I do NOT want the company!
