Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

What a gorgeous little face for Sunday!

Good morning.

Not a good night. I sent an email to the son yesterday and he evidently thought it was a letter, so he didn’t read it. I wanted him to open it asap because it was forwarded and contained an attachment. I needed to know if he could open the attachment and if not, I would try my Gmail account or copy and paste it.

I was exhausted last night, and fell asleep far sooner than I expected to. In my fatigue, I forgot to re-set the screen time-out on my phone to two minutes, so when he sent a text at 1830, the phone was still lit up two hours later when I rolled over in bed and the light woke me up.

Just as I expected, he couldn’t open the email. I wanted to call him, crawl through the phone and wring his neck.

Anyway, it kept me up almost three hours, and I wasn’t happy at that point. After the work I did yesterday, I woke up the second time and could hardly move. The shower didn’t help much and neither did the morphine, and with only an hour before I need to get ready for church, it is debatable if I will make it happen.

I have similar situations happen when I’m just sending an email into the next room. Then we end up with conversation where “just like it said in the email I sent you” is recurring trope. Ain’t technology wonderful?

I was awakened three times, two by the other person and one by the cat. I drank a lot of diet 7-up before bed, which wasn’t the smartest choice. On the plus said, I got up after 7:00 a.m. and don’t feel quite as much like death as yesterday.

I should know better than to try and send an attachment through Yahoo, because nine times out of 10, the recipient can’t open it, as you so well know.

But when I told him it was four pages and that he needed to download the thing, his response was, “Oh.”

I thought perhaps you weren’t feeling well yesterday, but I couldn’t ask you because *poof* you were gone!

Anyway, I sent him a text this morning telling him to let me know if he could open it because if not, I would send him a hard copy. Which I may do anyway.

Yeah, I was a little poorly yesterday, and we were very busy with choir all afternoon. Then Tom came over and we played Wingspan, which was nice.

It’s good that you’re feeling better today.

The jury is in. I’ll watch church from here. Tomorrow is not only laundry day, but I have an appointment at the pain clinic, which I forgot about, and somewhere in there, between the laundry and the appointment, I need to finish what I started yesterday, and get the filing done. I think I need more hanging files, though. I’ll see what happens.

I got smart and moved the bedroom fan closer to the door so it could pull in the cool air from in here, and it dropped the temperature by almost 10° in there.

Since I’m not going to church, I’ll spend part of this day writing a letter. ;o]

I think you have come up with a wise plan. Wearing yourself out doesn’t do anyone any good.

Oh, my, it’s 10:00 already. Look what sleeping late gets you! I need to start pulling myself together.

...Oh, my, it’s 10:00 already. Look what sleeping late gets you!...

I felt exactly the same way the first Sunday I changed my schedule for the first time! Just the loss of an hour made me feel deprived of the time I need to pull myself together and be able to get myself ready for church without feeling rushed!

I was going to listen to another talk, but usually, the shortest are 30 minutes, and I need to get the website ready for the Zoom meeting. I'm glad they can't see me! (For some reason, the video function doesn't work both ways on this laptop.)

I just got a short message from the son: "K" Sure.

Yes, and most days, I’m extremely grateful for his existence. But some days, he acts like his dad, whom he never knew. I can be grateful for tender mercies!

That Zoom app is something else. The sound on it is never quite what it should be so I spend a lot of time trying to read lips. Pretty hard to do when some of the older folks don’t move theirs, much.

Yep! I figured it was time for you to go!

Next year, I have no idea what the hours will be because there are only two wards and I have no idea what time the first one meets.

See ya when you get back! Unless you nap, first! ;o]

We’re back. It went fine. The teenbros were annoyed at being taken to the Spanish Mass, but they can go to youth group later.

It’s good you’re back!

I’ve been hobbling around, trying to find a way to ease the soreness, and I still can’t figure out what I did to make my muscles so tight and sore. I’m about half-tempted to give up and just go lie down but I want try and stay up a while longer.

I had to clean the filter on the A/C. It smells like cigarette smoke every time it cycles on. The only reason I can think of for that is my new neighbor. These places are non-smoking, but that doesn’t mean someone won’t smoke or will tell their friends not to. All I know it that it stinks. So I washed it then sprayed it with Air-Wick and that seems to have helped for now, but I’ll try to talk to Chuck about it tomorrow.

The guy has two vehicles and one of them is a HUGH ol’ Dodge truck with a winch on the front and he insists on pulling it forward into his parking spot until the curb stops the tires. (The other of his vehicles is an SUV that he parks in front and successfully blocks the wheelchair curb cut so I have to go out of my way to schlep the laundry cart to the next one, or rassle it off the curb.)

The problem is that the security light behind my truck is out (they’re dying one by one because the owners don’t want to spend the money to fix them) so unless I use a flashlight, chances are good I’ll bonk my knees on the winch. Also, there isn’t enough room for my laundry cart when the neighbor pulls forward like that.

Sounds like you need a flashlight! The world is full of extremely inconsiderate people.

It’s looking like it might thunderstorm. So much for Epic Fail doing the lawn! The poplar tree is trying to start its own forest. There are about ten little trees coming up.

I never knew a place could be so dark (once I gave up southern Utah for Vegas after my divorce) after the very bright sky glow of Clark County, so one of the first things I did was buy little flashlights and a couple of nightlights, one for the bathroom and one for the kitchen. I’ve since added two more (bedroom and living room) but the flashlights are everywhere. I have one I use specifically for Mondays and the walk to and from the clubhouse, one in my back pack, one in the nightstand drawer, and one I’ve kept on the oven door handle because there is no light in the oven. I also have a spare on the coat closet handle.

Most of the people here are kind, but there is always the exception. New move-ins are usually rude until they learn the unwritten rules of the place.

The mulberry trees are not going to be cut down until the roots cause some very serious plumbing problems. Thankfully, I plan to be gone by then, though I recognize the signs of minor problems. Also, the suckers from the tree are going to end up taking shingles off the roof, they’re low enough over the sidewalk that it’s difficult to get to the truck and there are some this year that are blocking my view of the road. I want to know who’s outside my place, so I’m not happy.

Chuck’s a nice guy, but unless I demand that he do something, it isn’t going to get done.

Iirc, Chuck is elderly and in poor health. It’s the management’s decision not to hire someone who has more energy to devote to the job.

Email said I was supposed to get my Lego set today, but it hasn’t appeared. Maybe tomorrow. I’m about to write the Special Animal Friend article for tomorrow. I’m starting a series (by request) on animals of the Sonoran Desert.
