A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Kitteh looks like he has a paint brush on his nose!
Good morning.
I’ve been up but I got a piece of email that overwhelmed me, so I’ve been reacting to it in various ways. More later.
Last night, as I was waiting for the room to cool off a little, I remembered that my cousin is coming a week from today. Of all the inconvenient things to have to deal with. It’s almost as bad as when I was given a plane ticket for a flight I didn’t want to make for Christmas.
So I’ll deal with the clutter by packing as much as I can this week. What a pain in the Astor Bar.
I’ll need to get busy soon but I have to wait a bit.
Oh...could you check “yelling” for me? I couldn’t get my daughter to listen to me, as she was sitting on a pile of clutter. Her dad was there, too. DANG! I wish I hadn’t packed that book! GAH! (I bet you do, too!)
“Yell” says “See Screams.” Screams says, “to dream of screaming - or yelling, I guess - yourself is considered a fortunate omen for all that concerns you closely.”
There’s no listing for “daughter” or “deceased ex-husband.”
You said you didn’t want any calendars, but somehow, I thought you might enjoy that one!
Emerald is my birth stone, so I automatically like them! Hypnotists, I hear, won’t try to put anyone under who is wearing an emerald. Not open to the power of suggestion!
I’m glad you enjoyed the trip!
And good morning! I remember that your cousin was coming. If your cousin is concerned about the pre-moving disarray, he can stick it in his ear.
We went wading in the creek, always fun.
I’ve decided that if Cousin Doug thinks I’m going to cook or provide a place for him to sleep, he’s sadly mistaken. I didn’t ask him to come. My cookware is packed, my freezer is almost empty and I’m NOT taking the bedding out of the trunk to give him a bed!
Things will be very packed by the time he gets here, and if it wears me out for the next month, then so be it. I tried to dissuade him, but he has the family stubbornness. Too bad his is one generation watered down from mine, or he might have a fight on his hands! NOT!
The Pioneer Force is strong in this one! ;o] (me)
You might want to mention to him that you hope he has found a comfortable place to stay, lest he imagine that you’re putting him up.
I haven’t done any creek wading for a long time. Maybe in Cabot! It IS always fun!
And after creek wading, dry socks!
Coffee isn’t doing it this morning. I’m going to need diet cola, too!
Oh, crikey, I hate mornings like that!
And T-h-e S-l-o-w-s have hit Hurricane.
Unngh.
I need to go change the sheets (I’m not going to do it on Mondays any more!) and then see how I feel. Maybe the filing will get done today, but if not, I won’t mention it again. ;o]
I’m going to work on the kitchen floor. We’ll see how it goes. Teenbros are just starting to arrive!
I think I’ll make the song sheet for tomorrow while Pat bakes whatever he’s doing. Oh, wait, he just mumbled, “It’s not worth it.” Maybe he’s going to microwave Whatever instead.
Whew!
I just changed the sheets and that wore me out but I had a shoe rack that was against the wall with storage tubs in front of it (inconvenient as all get out!) and I just pitched all the shoes into an empty tub, pulled out the shoe rack and disassembled it and shoved the tubs against the wall.
Now I need to build a box and decide which shoes to keep out for Sundays (three pairs, max) and seal up the rest and stack the box in here. I’m also going to move the box with the stereo in it to the growing pile in here.
I guess that counts as packing, but it wore me out! Now I’m going to take my next dose of pills and sit for a bit because I was too active too late in the morphine dose.
I also stirred up a lot of dust in that exercise, so I’m already using the inhaler! Usually, I don’t need it until almost bedtime.
What a day. Already.
*tagline*
Wow. I think I’m done for the day. I didn’t get any actual filing done, but I did do some sorting in preparation for the filing, and got a few things organized to be packed.
The bathroom is clean and that floor, the hall and this room have been dusted, as well as having had the trash taken out. I’m done for now, except to sit here and watch a thing about the Congo. I’m also thinking seriously about going to bed and forgetting about everything else!
But that’s not going to happen for several hours. I promised me!
You are far too kind! Thankfully, I left those behind in Vegas, but I’m sure Cabot will have a large supply!
That looks almost tempting. A lot of chocolate syrup to cover it and I could almost be persuaded it was food. ;o]
Looks delicious!
We had choir practice and a wedding and more practice. Now I’m going to lie down.
I’m not ready for lying down, yet, but the laptop is wonky, so I’m going to close it and finish watching Nat Geo.
See all y’all tomorrow!
