A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Best wishes! I wouldn’t know what to do with a mini-disk, either.
It’s just like a regular disk, but only 3” across. Not all DVD players are set up to play them, though, and I don’t know what kind of DVD player Charlie has so to be safe, I want to get him a regular sized disk. Right now, I’m waiting for a response from the seller to find out if he (seller) will ship it directly to Charlie.
Charlie was so excited when I told him I’d get him one he actually giggled! LOL!
It sounds familiar. I wouldn’t know whether we could play one!
My electric bill was only $49 for May, but I sure don’t want to see what June’s is going to be. With the temps being 100° and above for the next five days, it’s going be a lot more than $49!
Those few minutes I was outside sure got my allergies stirred up. Now, I think I’m going to call it a day, take my pills a little early and hope I hear from the DVD seller tomorrow, so I can send for Charlie’s movie. He really hates living there since I left.
When I first moved here I tried to talk him into putting in an application here, even telling him I’d come and drive his U-Haul, but like a lot of old folks, he was (is) afraid of the changes he would have to make. Now, there isn’t enough time. :o[
I hope you have a good night! Our electric bill hasn’t been bad, but we got a whopper of a water bill for last month.
Dat floof has rubber bones.
Good morning.
The only way I’m going to make it to 2000 for sleep time is to get up at 0500. I was out like a light before 1900, and slept until the alarm rang. Maybe you could look up baby ducks (of all things!) for me? A whole herd of them! LOL!
Since I haven’t heard from the seller on the DVD, I’ll just order it and then send it to Charlie when it gets here. He was so excited about getting it!
It’s 79° and Charlie said they broke a record of a bazillion years. It was 107° on Wednesday, the earliest for that temp. They’ve also been hit with Santa Ana winds and I don’t envy him that one. The winds can circle that valley for days, and after about a week, people get really testy. Everything they touch gives them a shock. It’s not a fun place to live when the wind blows.
Good morning!
“You’ll be lucky if you dreamed of ducks, unless they attacked you.”
It’s warm and drizzly here, but supposed to be nice later. We’ll be leaving shortly on the trip to gem mining. I hope traffic won’t be bad, since we will be leaving the city in the morning and coming into the city in the afternoon.
Thanks!
Well, I do hope your gem mining proves fun, if not profitable.
Watch out for the other guy!
I’m headed for the shower, so I guess I’ll see you when you get back. After a nap with a cat, of course! ;o]
IIRC, DVDs and CDs actually play from the center out. So a mini-disc can play in a standard disc player. The player just stops reading at the end. No harm, no foul.
These guys seem to agree. https://itstillworks.com/12138690/how-to-play-a-mini-dvd
Good morning. Happy Friday!
May your bed always be large enough for your body.
Thanks! I never knew that, but it makes sense to me. The hard part comes in convincing Charlie that that’s the way things work.
He doesn’t have a computer, and I left too soon to help him get one and learn how to use it. He’s more comfortable with vacuum tubes and VHS tapes, and I’m sure that’s only because he was fairly young when they became available.
I’ll bring it up in my letter to him today so that he will know about it in case I run across the same problem in the future.
Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme, among others are offering a free donut today...some places offering a second donut with vaccination card.
Never too late for anther cuppa Joe and a donut.
I don’t know that this town sells donuts anywhere. But it sure would be nice to have a Krispy Kreme. They’re almost as good as the ones I used to make!
Just call the police department.
;>)
You didn’t say how many letters were coming in total, but four of them are in today’s mail. If one is numbered, 5 or higher, then I’ll know there are more to come!
I’ll be watching for the mailman for sure!! Almost like Christmas! :o])
This country seriously has a “national x day” problem. Who needs a national day for the doughnut or the donut or anything else that means the same?
Anybody who wants one knows how great they are. Anyone who doesn’t will need a lot more than a national day to convince them.
There were actually five letters in the mail, so if there are more, they will come later.
Now, I’m going to take myself to bed. I won’t sleep, of course, but I need to lie down.
I was going to clean the bathroom, but only found one glove, so the rest are packed and why, I don’t know. Still it needs to be done!
There were five mailed on Tuesday. I got one from you today and a calendar. What fun!
Our trip to the emerald mines was fun. More tomorrow!
