Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

‘Face said goodnight.

Kathleen wants to sleep on my camping cot. She cleaned her room sufficiently, so I set it up.

We currently expect to be able to have live church, although the attendance at the Spanish service is starting to push the limits. I don’t think our pastor will say anything to discourage them, though.

Oh, how I hate the updates!I get them about once a month from Firefox and MicroSlobber. Sometimes, they come on the same day. Firefox, I can delay. MS, I can’t. Insidious piece of work.

Unngh.

My Favorite Daughter began to text me around 1840 telling me she was sending a package and that it will be here a week from tomorrow. Godiva chocolate truffles. There was some other small talk and after almost 30 minutes of nothing, I sent her a text asking if it was OK to go back to sleep.

Nothing. So I’m ready to put the mahjong away and get some sleep and there she is, telling me that she and her SO have to be tested for COVID because someone at work has it and no one told FD and SO for three days.

Life is good. :o|

Now I’m going to go comb my head and wash my face off and get busy in the kitchen, even though I don’t feel like moving from this spot.

What a pretty floof!

Good morning.

After I was finally able to put down the Kindle and turn over for sleep, the thought crossed my mind: What goes around comes around.

Years and years ago, I used to call my mother in the middle of the night and talk to her, just so I could hear her voice. It’s now Payback Time. So I won’t complain in the future when FD sends me texts. We never know how long we have, and though I was in my 30’s when my mother passed, I know FD needs to have that contact with me.

My mother has been gone out of my life for a lot more years than she was in it, and I still miss her. FD still feels she has a lot of catching up to do to make up for the years when she “hated” me.

Good morning. Sounds like a good way to re-arrange your thinking.

It’s chill in here this morning, but I have hot coffee.

It’s called “survival.” Yeah. Like that.

I have cold water, even though it’s chilly in here. Now, I think I’ll go play in the kitchen for a few minutes.

Who knows what the end result may be? :o]

Kitchen. Done. Even the floor got dusted, so I have no more obstacle course, as well as room to stack boxes that I’ve packed. When I get to them, that is!

Just that little bit of rearranging feels like actual progress toward the move. YAY!

Now, if I can just get BUSY!

I’m overwhelmed by your achievement at such an early hour!

I sorted a load of laundry while caroling, “Rise and shine! Up and at ‘em!” at the youths.

I figured out why it was chilly in here: a window was open by the dinner table. I think someone put it up for Jake yesterday afternoon.
