A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Favorite Son posted photos of their snow storm on FB yesterday with the caption of, “We’ve survived the Snowvid storm of 2021!”
It has snowed there before, but this looks like about 4” worth, and I’ve never seen it that deep. Four inches here is a lot, actually.
It would be okay if we got snow here, but we haven’t.
I just got Bill the Son to cough up his address so I could mail him something. Now I need to pass it on to my mother before I lose it.
I’ve also cleaned the bathroom and made boys clean some stuff, too.
Back from church.
It was nice to be there, instead of watching it on “TV.” There were quite a few people there, surprisingly. Since we split one ward and merged with another, both Sharon and I were wondering who all the people were, since they all had masks.
I hope the silliness ends before the world does.
That's what petting them is about. It may be our only salvation.
Another great one from the PunMaster of FR!! <3
Back from church. Big crowd. Like ‘Face, I’m not sure who all the people are. The Volunteer Committee said quite a few new people are coming. I hope I’ll get to meet them some day.
Kathleen has Cub Scouts at 4:00, so I have a few minutes before we have to rush off. I can wear my hiking boots along with my ankle brace, which is nice. I couldn’t wear it with my black canvas flats for church.
I won’t be having any meetings except with the bedding, and I’m beginning to feel the effects of being up in the night, again.
I need to go to bed before I fall asleep sitting up!
Have a good evening, both of you and I’ll see all y’all tomorrow!
I hope you have an excellent night this time!
I did, thanks! Now I’m going to finish getting dressed, then sort the laundry and get outta here for forty minutes.
BBS
Glad to hear it! I think I did, too. The cats are ready for their meat snack.
The laundry is ready to be hung up, but before that happens, I’ll have my tea, an hour earlier than usual, but I just want to get it out of the way. Not even a week in on this round and I’m already tired of it.
I’m always surprised when I step outside and see the moon in any phase. This morning was no exception. I always have to stand in the middle of the street, look up and gawk at the moon, then find the Big Dipper and the North Star and then look for Orion. I’ve promised to dig out my star chart and binoculars when I move. I’d do it here, but I don’t know where to look for them...
Sometimes I see the moon and stars when I go out for the newspaper in the morning. It’s raining again today.
Awww...fluffy kitteh.
Good morning.
I finally got my right knee to behave itself and now, the left one is acting up. It only does it in my sleep, but the pain is so awful it wakes me up. Still, I was able to go back to sleep, for which I was glad!
When I checked my email earlier this morning, there was a message from U-Haul about the boxes I ordered on Saturday. I read over it to make sure everything was correct (after changing my address on Saturday) and found that they had the street address correct, but the city and ZIP were in Henderson. *face palm*
So I got busy and emailed them and told them that the order site defaulted to Henderson, and would they please make the corrections? I know the woman who lives in the apartment I vacated and she is a nasty piece of work. I’m sure that she would keep the boxes and swear they never arrived. But don’t get me started. If I don’t get an email by 0700, I’ll call the 800 number and hope I’m in time.
ARRGH!! Mondays!
It’s partly cloudy this morning, but the clouds are high and thin, so the brighter stars can be seen.
I’d like to take the WSJ, but it will have to wait until I get moved. Do they still put out their April Fool’s Day edition? I would imagine that the world is too PC for them to do that safely, these days.
Honestly, I don’t remember if they do April Fool’s Day. My life is a blur!
And I’m so cold!
I’m sorry you’re so cold! Mostly because I’m that way so much of the time. Bundle up! Snuggle with a cat ball! ;o]
The catballs are angry because it’s raining, because I gave Shannon a pill, and because I didn’t give them all the sliced ham, only some.
We turned the fake fire on and warmed the dining room up a little.
Good morning. Happy Monday.
We had some warm-ish weather yesterday with lots of sun. But not much snow melted. We’re supposed to get another 3 inches today. We’ll see.
There are apps for the phones you can download that will show you what’s in whatever direction you’re pointing it.
