Geologists 'resurrect' missing tectonic plate
Phys.org ^ | 10/20/2020 | Sara Tubbs, University of Houston

A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography images—similar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.

"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."

Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.

Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

Oh, crikey. I had the sudden urge for a soft-boiled egg and yesterday, I packed my egg cups...

(Unngh...my favorite word this week, so far!)

Maybe I’ll settle for a poached egg on toast, after my shower in the morning.

You can put a soft boiled egg in a different dish.

I’m about to leave for the stable with Kathleen. There was discussion of her having a Cub Scouts meeting after 5:00 today, but nothing official has been said, so I guess most people said they weren’t available.

Rafaela is coming over at 6:00 to practice for Mass tomorrow night.

I suddenly heard Fagan singing, “I think I’d better think it out again.”

But, my dear, it just isn't DONE.

But soft-boiled eggs taste so “English” in egg cups!! Ant they’re so easy to decapitate that way!

I’m on my way down the hall. I thought I’d try to stay awake until I saw the mail truck go by but I just can’t manage it.

So good luck to Kathleen and her riding lesson, good luck to you and Rafaela tonight.

See yas tomorrow...

Coarsely ground corn, like polenta. You boil them up like rice using either water or milk. The “real Southern” way is to add a little butter and salt, but I like maple syrup. You can also use meat gravy.

I think it’s like corn fritters, where you take corn kernels and some dough and fry them in oil. We always put maple syrup on those. Maybe it’s a Midwesterner thing.

I like grits with garlic butter.

Grits and maple syrup does sound intriguing.

Now, I’m heading for the shower to warm up.

Corn fritters, otherwise known as “corn patties” in the Upper Midwest, are best made with saltines, creamed corn and an egg to hold it together, then fried over medium-high heat until brown and crispy. They don’t keep well, but some of us like like them the second day, if they last that long... ;o]

Awww... A pair of tuxedos!!

Good morning.

The shower has been had and the good news is that I may be able to make some progress in packing today. Maybe. I have some things to do first, but then...

Also I’ll be going to the library and to pick up a prescription and of course, when I get home from that, my day will be essentially over with. As usual.

Good morning!

The podiatrist was going to call in a prescription and email me about the ankle brace, and neither seems to have happened, so I will phone them as soon as they open.

I’m still exchanging voice mails with the colonoscopy scheduler, too. I don’t have anything on the calendar today until after 7:00 p.m., so maybe I’ll be here when she phones back this time.

I don’t think there’s anything more frustrating that telephone tag.

Maybe the podiatrist’s office is overwhelmed.

Gonna be a slow morning, here...nothing is getting done. I had more responses to make on FB than I expected, and that slowed me down. But now, I’ll get busy!

It is very busy at the podiatrist.

We have books to pick up at the library, but I will send Patrick, so as to be here when Michelle-the-scheduler calls.
