A team of geologists at the University of Houston College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics believes they have found the lost plate in northern Canada by using existing mantle tomography imagessimilar to a CT scan of the earth's interior. The findings, published in Geological Society of America Bulletin, could help geologists better predict volcanic hazards as well as mineral and hydrocarbon deposits.
"Volcanoes form at plate boundaries, and the more plates you have, the more volcanoes you have," said Jonny Wu, assistant professor of geology in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. "Volcanoes also affect climate change. So, when you are trying to model the earth and understand how climate has changed since time, you really want to know how many volcanoes there have been on earth."
Wu and Spencer Fuston, a third-year geology doctoral student, applied a technique developed by the UH Center for Tectonics and Tomography called slab unfolding to reconstruct what tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean looked like during the early Cenozoic Era. The rigid outermost shell of Earth, or lithosphere, is broken into tectonic plates and geologists have always known there were two plates in the Pacific Ocean at that time called Kula and Farallon. But there has been discussion about a potential third plate, Resurrection, having formed a special type of volcanic belt along Alaska and Washington State.
Using 3-D mapping technology, Fuston applied the slab unfolding technique to the mantle tomography images to pull out the subducted plates before unfolding and stretching them to their original shapes.

But do they taste good?
Meh. Not as sweet as I expected, but still, not too bad. I’ll wait until tomorrow and have another slice and see if there is any difference. They’ve all been bagged, now, so we shall see what my taste buds tell me in the morning.
You might want to check out “The Brokenwood Mysteries,” the series from New Zealand. Not too bad, most likely because the episodes usually always have a surprising twist at the end. The main character is rather a “Colombo-esque” kinda guy.
Fun series, so far! :o])
LOL!
Feline aspic!
LOL! Good morning!
Attack of the killer mutant snowgoons
Teh highbrows got bigger’n’ anyfing!
Good morning.
I was done with my laundry and was making sure the foyer door was locked and the blinds were set back to where they were, and I heard the combination on the laundry room door engage.
Someone came in to see who was there. Well, golly, missy, if you have to UNLOCK the door to get in, then it must be someone inside who knows the combination, as in: lives in the complex. She may have been armed, but that wouldn’t have been surprising here. I just told her I was “here every Monday from about 0230 to 0400,” and asked her what apartment she lives in. And me unarmed.
My right knee is bothering me again, so I don’t know how much I’ll get done today. Right now, I have an ice pack on it but I have to go hang up the clothes.
The fruitcake tastes much better this morning. the rum glaze made the cakes moist and gave just a tad more flavor, so I guess I can give them away!
Good morning. It is Monday here, too, but at least only I was in the laundry room.
That’s good news about the fruitcakes, and I hope your knee feels better after a while. I plan to call a podiatrist today and see if I can get an appointment in this lifetime. I’m tired of my foot hurting all the time.
Your foot and my knee.
Now I have to go make the bed. After that, I’ll see how my knee is feeling and depending, well, I may get something done.
Sharon was the Text Monster last night, and she wanted to take me some place today to show me something. That’s all I know! She said she and Jerry had gotten take-away from the Rooster Run cafe for Thanksgiving, for $19.95, including dessert. Had I known, I might have given more thought to the TV dinner. ;o]
Here it be all Monday and everything. Happy Monday.
It was a quiet puppy weekend this weekend, which was nice. I hope you all are enjoying the end of November 2020.
I’m glad the puppy was a success this weekend.
We had significant rain overnight. Pat got to use his foul-weather gear. It’s just drizzly on and off this morning.
So glad puppy had nothing stressful happen and you and Mrs ArGee had no surprises to deal with.
As you you, Nully, that was hilarious! LOL! I needed that!
No rain in sight for us, T-c, but we still need it. The barometer and Admiral Fitz are telling me what my knee has been saying all along. A low front is headed this way but whether it will bring any moisture or not is another story.
In checking the weather map, AR gets the storms about the same time you do. I guess the airports aren’t that far apart. An hour and 16 minutes.
I stole it fair and square from pookie18...
LOL! I think I’ll have to steal it from you!
It’s clearing up now. Might be nice to go outside later.
Spoke too soon: it’s clouding up again. Might be nice to get under several blankets with a cat later.
I did NOT laugh at that.
And, if you believe that ...
