Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute thread. Plane crashed 43 years ago today.

The day the music really died. Miracle that so many people survived. Drummer Artemis Pyle and piano player Billy Powell were able to walk out of the woods to seek help despite severe injuries. Artemus Pyle actually had ribs sticking out of his chest. It must have been pure shock that allowed him to walk out of the woods.

I was a sophomore in High School in Tacoma, WA when I heard this devastating news. Seemed like a bunch of good ol' boys.

Interesting the Freebird was not a favorite among honky tonk patrons. It was written as a 3 minute slow love song and the crowd would boo and heckle the band as they played it. The guitarists added a few seconds here and a few seconds there night after night to give Ronnie Van Zant a chance to rest his voice until it ultimately became a ten to fifteen minute song long song that concert-goers came to appreciate.

I was a junior but I hated all that rock crap.

I wasn’t even aware of it.

Led Zep, Lynyrd Skynyrd etc... Owned my school.

In the summer of 1977, they were well on their way to being one of the greatest bands of all time.

Well it ended up being that way anyhow.

I was a sophomore in high school, driving home from Football practice (Thursday before a friday game). Heard about it over the radio.

43 years... wow.

Love all the bands that had multiple great guitarists, and Skynyrd certainly did,.

I had a conversation with my 32 year old unemployed son today. He lost his job due to business slowdown from Covid-19. He was wondering what direction he should go with his experience and education. I didn’t think about it when we were talking, but I gave him the same advice as the Momma in this song.

It is one (of many) of my favorite LS songs.

The people who liked those two bands in my school were the bullies, drinkers, druggies, and perverts.

Well I hope Neil Young will remember.

This southern man don’t need him around anyhow.

In my home state the song Sweet Home Alabama is practically our state anthem.

Gimme Three Steps. Saw them in Cincinnati, winter of ‘76, I think. Fantastic live band. Al Kooper discovered and produced them. Pretty good interview about it here.

“The people who liked those two bands in my school were the bullies, drinkers, druggies, and perverts.”

A fair generalization and it was the vast majority of my school.

‘Simple Man’ is a song that I have shared with male relatives as dear to my heart.

I was a young girl when a friend shared their music with me. It was an album her big brother had, laf. Was after the wreck. But I loved the music right away.

Heh, heh.

Supposedly based on a real event. I'm sure it was embellished a little. I guess Ronnie Van Zant was a little guy but he was a troublemaker and used to start fights just for the sake of fighting but that night a girl asked him to dance and he ended up running for his life when her boyfriend threatened to shoot him.

Rossington, Collins and Van Zant wrote the song on the way home from the bar.

Gary Rossington talks about Gimme Three Steps
