A Fall River man ripped up an 82-year-old Air Force veteran’s Trump sign and beat him up, kicking the man repeatedly, police say.
Aiden Courtright, 24, of Fall River, was arraigned Wednesday and is being held for a dangerousness hearing that will take place Thursday, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office. That hearing, at the request of the DA Thomas Quinn’s office, will determine whether Courtright is able to be released on bail.
Courtright is charged with a civil rights violation with injury, assault and battery on someone over 60 with injury, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and vandalizing property. Fall River cops in a police report described the incident as a “political hate crime.”
Police said the 82-year-old was standing at the rotary at North Main Street and Airport Road shortly after 5 p.m. when a man — later identified as Courtright — put his car into park and confronted the man, according to the police report filled out by Fall River Police about the incident.
Courtright then “ripped” the sign out of the man’s hands, “tore it in half and threw it to the ground,” police say.
“Courtright then went after chase, grabbing him by his shirt knocking his hat off, and throwing him violently to the ground,” Fall River police wrote, noting that Courtright had pointed leather shoes. “Once (the victim) was on the ground he continued the attack by kicking him in the ribs and legs.”
The 82-year-old suffered what the police report described as “minor” injuries, but did have to go to the hospital, and has “visible bruising on his lower back.
The cops wrote that two witnesses nearby corroborated the 82-year-old’s description of what happened.
Cops says Courtright hid out from them in his apartment, but then turned himself in when contacted by police.
Cops noted that the victim served in the Air Force in the 1950s.

I hope someone is keeping a track record of these types of attacks. Seems like they are reported every day here on FR and we know this is not the totality of them all.
Will start tracking but I am way behind. Maybe some smart FReeper is way ahead of me on this effort.
If the 82 year old had been an Italian-American, this situation would be handled a bit differently by his family. No need for the police.
How many of these attacks on U.S. have there been? Too many to count. Depending on how this election turns out,the score has to be evened or better.
At 76 years old I don't get into fist fights anymore. That is why I always carry a firearm. Oh wait! This is in MA and the people (elderly) don't have the means of self defense. Sorry, I lost my head for a minute.

There are many who are bitter that Coppola did not film the retribution scene as written by Puzo in the book. It would have been very instructional. It would have explained why a community that could not get justice from the police and courts, tolerated the Mafia. There simply was no child molestation, drug dealing or even the transit of drug addicts through Italian neighborhoods. Also it would have demonstrated to the high and mighty that there are consequences to abusing people.
Not completely true, we can and do have the means. It is just that they don’t make it as easy to do it. MA is a “May Issue” state, and most localities do issue if you ask. But there are no doubt some a-hole localities, where the Chief of Police is a hard core Leftist. I have heard a few stories.
I have a close friend who wanted to be able to carry, but was worried they wouldn’t grant one because he had been busted for drunk driving decades ago, but I convinced him to apply for a conceal carry permit. He did, then didn’t hear back from them for a year. When I talked to him, I encouraged him to just call and find out for sure if his application had been declined, and if so, why.
When he called, they said “Oh, we have had it right here in this desk drawer in an envelope, we called you to come pick it up, but nobody answered and we couldn’t leave a message.”
Apparently, they had an old phone number on file they were using instead of the one he put on the form...
But no, you can get conceal carry here. We face the same problems other Americans all over the country face if they defend themselves, though.
It seems like if you have to resort to defending yourself, in today’s America your future is a crap shoot. I hate that it is.
Perhaps that can be changed someday.
