A California woman who was missing for nearly two weeks at Zion National Park in Utah was found safely on Sunday and reunited with her family. Holly Suzanne Courtier, 38, hadn’t been seen since riding a private shuttle into the park’s Grotto area on Oct. 6. Her disappearance prompted multiple search and rescue efforts that were complicated by the fact that Courtier didn’t have a cell phone and hadn’t left a trip itinerary.

I heard a variation on that...and 3 seconds without hope

Apparently you have not been to Zion. Zion is full of trees. Pinion pines, Canyon Live Oak etc. etc. It is a jungle in the desert.

She is thought to possibly be wearing a "Pistil Gray Trucker Hat, a Patagonia Black Nano Puff Jacket, a Dark Tank Top, Danner Trail Gray Hiking Boots, and an Osprey Blue Multi-day Pack."
She was also thought to possibly be carrying a cream-colored hoody sweatshirt, a Rumple Nanoloft puffy blanket and a camouflage-colored double hammock.

That sounds like a lady who was planning on being gone a while or one who is really OCD about having survival gear with her at all times.

I never carried that much with me even when hunting in the northern woods much less for a couple of hours of hiking.

We hiked out 45 miles with heavy packs for four days over rugged terrain without food.

Wow, curious how much weight you lost.

It was the cumulative effect of the trip, but, yeah, that four days really did it. I went in at 192 pounds and came out at 167 (and that weigh-in was after breakfast). Put on 12 more pounds the first day back. Ate nonstop.

And since she did not leave an itenirary, they had no idea where to focus looking for her.

25 lbs, that is substantial. And then 12 lbs back in a day...that’s almost the more impressive number. That’s a lot of dang food.

There is that tie-dyed t-shirt in the picture of her. On that basis, I predict she is no conservative, so yes, likely a California Democrat. The rest of it does sound a bit sketchy.

I lost eight pounds one night playing hockey-I only weighed myself to find out because I was pretty dizzy when I got home...

I know. Not healthy.

But...I know my weight loss was all water...not fat or muscle.

Yeah, the instructors told me to slow down or I would get sick. I didn't slow down and I didn't get sick. We went to an all-you-can-eat prime rib restaurant and I must have eaten close to ten portions.

Basically, I was refilling an empty digestive tract in one day.

Playing on ice and sweating like a pig. If you haven’t played the game it doesn’t make sense. Hydration is key and water in Zion Park is around. Lots in this story is odd from what we’ve seen. I’m an elk hunter in Idaho, I’ve been to that area. If you’re lost, I think you meant to be. Search and rescue down there’s a lot easier than in the mountains around here. IMHO

She has a nutso look in her vacant eyes. She was probably just hanging out smoking the wacky weed and lost track of time.

Right, it was water, some from sweating and some from burning glycogen which is stored with water. And actually 8 pounds isn’t all that extreme, oddly enough.

For reference here’s a runner’s forum where they’re talking about weight loss during marathons and other long runs. 8 pounds is about the norm. One guy mentions 15 pounds was considered the safe upper limit during his high school football practices.

Good points.

I was a goalie, and I got so tired in that game I was praying I didn’t go to the ice again because I was really having trouble getting back on my skates!

Oh man, prime rib—you guys did it right. I once did a three day fast and broke it with an enormous meal of ham hocks and beans & rice and cornbread. I have never had such a satisfying meal. Incidentally I lost about ten pounds over the course of that fast and quickly gained back about six of it. I figure that was the water weight portion. The other four pounds or so took a while to come back.
