The USS Stout and its crew lived up to its name after spending a record-breaking 215 consecutive days at sea after the coronavirus pandemic made it unsafe to pull into ports around the world.
The destroyer left Virginia's Naval Station Norfolk in mid-January and finally ended its grueling nine-month deployment when it returned home on October 11, the US Navy said.
Along the way, the USS Stout traveled more than 60,000 nautical miles, completing multiple strait and choke point transits as it crossed the Atlantic Ocean while operating in the US 2nd, 5th and 6th fleets carrying out various missions including ensuring the free flow of commerce.

Thank you :)
You must be from the part of Indiana away from Lake Michigan. I remember a failed campaign when I was a kid, to buy the WW2 battleship USS Indiana and dock it in the Gary-Michigan City area. Unfortunately not enough money was raised and the Navy sent the ship to the breakers.
Not sure what ‘high-tech’ materials that you’re referencing, the hull is steel. Put steel in salt water it rusts pretty fast. Usually there are bolt-on sacrificial anodes made of lead or some such material that are designed to slow the process. When the ship is in the yard or pier-side (with divers) they can be replaced. Probably not safe to do while at sea. Topside that’s a lot of chipping & painting for the crew. Eventually the rust wins.
No, I’m fairly close to Lake Michigan and have been on that quite a bit, but I’m sure it’s absolutely nothing like being on the Ocean.
No reason an exception couldnt have been made.
215 days is a record?
I’d have to look it up but on Kittyhawk I think we did like 367 days and that wasn’t even close to what they did during WW2
1975 or 1976 USS George K. Mackenzie DD836 (Big Mac)
North Arabian Sea we were in a big storm ... a “Sand Storm” at Sea and it really did Sand Blast us, we were brown! Once we got back in the South China Sea in protected waters and out of the wind we had it pretty much painted back to the original Haze Gray (via orange and yellow primer) in about a week or so, before pulling into Subic Bay (My favorite Home away from Home)
I really miss my youthful self or maybe just youth itself, doesn’t seem like it was that long ago, but it was.
*** “because warships have huge stores of paint on board?” ***
YEAH ... THEY DO
Every Division has it’s own Paint, Coffee, Floor Wax and Brass Polish (aka Never Dull) stored away in all kinda hidey holes ... besides you could always get Paint from Bubba the Bosen
And every Division had a scrounge ... the PO that would keep Inventory and Trade with other Divisions and keep Chief informed of Stocks (Coffee in my Division was the most Important as we kept the Bridge caffeinated)
*** “some time possibly Newport News and get a refit and good sprucing” ***
What a bunch of pansies ... they don’t have any E-3’s? E-4’s?
***”How times have changed”***
This I know, you are probably 18-21yrs my elder (my Dad is 87)
There were not only flus and Malaria and all kinda other things that Penicillin could fix, for everything else there was Red Pills, White Pills and Line up for the Corpsman and he would give you a couple of shots ... (Damned Yellow Fever Shot itched for at least a week)
Big Ships, Little Ships or Shore Duty we did not worry because we were Young and Bulletproof.
I am 65 now but I still have that mindset, I have been to at least 40 Countries and met MANY seasoned Citizens that took ZERO medications in those many Countries... Countries with mosquitoes the size of hummingbirds.
Just the Date of Nov 4th will probably kill more people than Covid on that day
When did I start rambling? I am Not Joe Biden, I just got side tracked... Covid Lockdown and Sheeple Masks suck and makes my mind wander all over the place ;^)
*** “Who gets to scrape the hull?” ***
Why would you want or need to?
*** “Those things are tiny!” ***
Not really, you just have 340 roomates
(My Favorite Ship was GK Mackenzie DD836, lots of friends)
*** “The crew all racked up some serious sea time for their career files. Promotions coming for everyone” ***
Are you an idiot or trying to be sarcastic?
*** “Haze gray...” ***
And Underway!
Gee I wish I was Young again!!!

I don’t ‘do’ Drs (if you don’t see them they can’t tell you what is wrong) and other than USN, have NEVER taken the Flu shot or any other ‘government sponsored’ shot) Don’t miss work, never a sick day.
Granted I was a ‘hardheaded’ drunk for 30 some years and with a high tolerance etc, learned the WORST thing one could do is miss work because of drinking and that just carried on, other than O’Douls NO alcohol since 1990, I didn’t hunker down when they told me to, continue to work (I have ‘dedicated runs’ 3 times a week).
Can’t/won’t/don’t wear a mask even though I do have a legitimate excuse would probably balk at it anyway but NOT to the point of ‘fighting over it’.
This has definitely been a ‘summer of terror’ and I get called a ‘conspiracy theorist’ because I loudly and openly contend this is just one GIANT HOAX that got out of hand.
!6 years my senior and yet we are almost twins
Can’t say I have been alcohol free for 30 years but for my job I have went years almost a teetotaler, I work 7 days a week (cost me my Marriage of 25 years, my last Vacation was my Honeymoon)
I don’t own a mask, just wear a Bandana to get in the door then it’s around my neck
My business is / has been destroyed by this Covid HOAX, all the Accountants, Secretaries, Cat Herders are gone. Don’t ask an MIT Computer guy to be an Accountant, when you correct their work they block your number and No Communication = No Customer Satisfaction = Law Suits or Canceled Orders then the MIT guy poisons the well with his other over educated buddies that still have jobs ... and makes it impossible to do anything at all which makes it easy for the litigious Customers and a laugh fest for the MIT guy
I Lost 70 lbs last year, My BP is now good as are my blood sugars and I take 0 meds at this time (Statins is another Sham)
My MD went the other way, got fatter and takes a boatload of prescribed BS he is 48 and I look younger than him at 65
My Blood work came back better than his too and that is according to him. (he wanted to check me because I was eating a lot of eggs ...I had 28 Chickens so I ate a LOT of Eggs)
I may be broke but as long as I have chickens, I will never go hungry
I dont own a mask, just wear a Bandana to get in the door then its around my neck
= = = = = = = = = = =
Likewise with bandana (SKULL & XBONES with STAY AWAY FROM ME) but for ‘business purposes only will still tell ‘the gate’ I have respiratory problems and keep walking but if ‘pushed’ I will warn them I may fall out at any minute etc...
On your BP/cholos and eggs etc
Sure you heard the old chestnut of the guy having the Dr to tell him to cut back on bacon/eggs etc and the guy saying ‘my grandfather ate 6 eggs and half a pound of bacon every day of his life and died at 95 back when people didn’t live that long..
DR: “Maybe so, BUT that was before we knew about cholesterols”
Got my standard Navy Discharge physical (sign hear and leave OR....) and next one was in 2007 for a cataract exam.
I have to get around to getting my post op checkup one of these days...<: <: <:
