It was my understanding that up to 1000 light years distance could be determined by the slight shift seen against the background stars from opposite points of Earth’s orbit. You’d think that is the technique that would verify the distance.

It is only neighborhood stars for which parrallax works. The closer they are the better the accuracy of the measurements.

Betelgeuse Is Neither as Far Nor as Large as We Thought, And It's a Total Bummer On the contrary. If it's gotta be closer, being larger could be the total bummer for old planet Earth.

Well...That information certainly changes my schedule for today...
The only real question is whether or not this info will be censored on social media...

I do believe most of them agree any closer than 50-100ly (some say 200ly) would be a real problem.

Zaphod Beeblebrox hails from a planet of the Betelgeuse system. He and his semi half-brother Ford Prefect travel quite a bit, thus avoid trouble in the old neighborhood. Should they visit home, besides the towel, remind them to pack some two-million sunblock... just in case.
To: dfwgator
Does this mean we only have to say Betelgeuse 2 times instead of 3?

If you’ve done 6 impossible things this morning, why not round it off with breakfast at Milliways?

Well said. But if you said it on Twitter youd be banned.
