It was my understanding that up to 1000 light years distance could be determined by the slight shift seen against the background stars from opposite points of Earth’s orbit. You’d think that is the technique that would verify the distance.

For farther away stars, yes, but Betelgeuse is in the neighborhood....................

It is only neighborhood stars for which parrallax works. The closer they are the better the accuracy of the measurements.

I do believe most of them agree any closer than 50-100ly (some say 200ly) would be a real problem.

Zaphod Beeblebrox hails from a planet of the Betelgeuse system. He and his semi half-brother Ford Prefect travel quite a bit, thus avoid trouble in the old neighborhood. Should they visit home, besides the towel, remind them to pack some two-million sunblock... just in case.
