Retirement!? (Vanity)
Vanity ^ | 10/14/2020 | Me

Posted on 10/14/2020 8:11:14 PM PDT by hiho hiho

I have operated a small business for many decades. I'm tired -- and tired of all the paperwork, insurance, and taxes. I wouldn't mind cutting back to part time, but it doesn't seem like a financially viable option as my insurance costs and paperwork would likely not decrease. So, now the quandary -- what do I do with my time if I retire? I want do remain active and keep the mind busy. I don't want to sit and watch TV or spend all day on the internet. What do all you retirees do with your time?

I’m not busier. Thankfully. But I owned my own small business and had four kids. Along with a busy personal life.

Was fortunate to retire really early. Have never regretted it, never been a TV watcher, rarely been bored, and enjoy doing lots of different things each day.

You must know a lot of listless, tepid people to think retirement is so awful.

Sounds about like me, except I don’t go to the casino. It took me about three years to recover from the stress of my job as an RN. (I can’t blame it all on the job; I am an easily stressed person with an anxiety disorder). Now I do what I want, and DON’T do what I don’t want, unless it’s necessary for the well-being of myself or my family. I’m sure I’ll have some regrets, as I admit to my LORD, at judgment, my sin of wasting time, the one thing we can never get back. But He knows my problems and my needs. He knows my feet are clay. I’m trying to be more active, working on projects on the house. I retired at 62, and I’m almost 69.

I am wondering the same thing. The COVID lockdown has given me a bit of a preview of retirement and I don’t think I like it.

“ I’m busier in retirement than I ever was working”
You said it! I have been retired for 8 years and wonder how did I ever have time for a job.

Just jump in and let life show you new ways to live...

I retired in 1986 after a 20-year career in physics...

After a few months of relaxation, I started an AI development company with a focus first in the area of chronic pain, then, for several years in the area of open heart surgery...

Then decided to retire again. This time, for several years, the wife & I spent our time with bass fishing a couple of days a week all up & down the eastern seaboard and taking four 1-week gambling trips to Las Vegas each year...

Then, in 2000, a miracle happened... After having many grandsons around, we finally had a granddaughter born...
Since both her parents were career professionals, we became the nanny, chauffeur, etc, etc, etc, for her... This lasted 18-years, until she went off to college... A junior this year and med school in sight...

Also, from 2003-to-2015, I put 40-years of bodybuilding to good use when I began training both male & female competition bodybuilders and female figure & bikini competitors...

Now we have retired once again, although we do enjoy the many grandchildren and great grandchildren that live here in MD... The wife, in particular, also enjoys the four nearby casinos (MD,PA,WV)

Yep! Jump in... Just pray that the communists do not win this election... That will change everything...

I would give anything to be able to retire, but I am too young right now.

I have a master list of all the amazing things I plan to do at retirement:

* Hit the gym more regularly (4-5 times per week) * Obtain and learn to play a professional drum set * Join a low-key rock band * Refurbish a Ford Econoline Van into a mini-Winnebago, and travel throughout the country. * Return to regular church attendance * Continue restoring broken/abandoned toys to factory condition * Take up woodwork/table-saw hobbies with lumber * Build a model railroad / aircraft carrier * Build a model race track * Travel from coast to coast by rail, and spend extra money on enhanced train cabins and modified trains. * Learn the basics of flying and landing an airplane. I would give anything to have time to do these and so many other things.

So will grandkids I have a 10 YO grandson and a 4 month old granddaughter. Both live close by, and I usually pick up my grandson after school.

I can’t imagine what life would be like if I didn’t see them regularly.

I’m A 65 year old woman and just retired from my desk job of 25 years as part owner of a heavy/highway construction company in rural Texas. My dad left me 1200 acres and I bought a skid steer last year and have been clearing trees and cleaning out fences with it, along with a lot of manual labor. I’ve lost 15 pounds and never worked harder but am having more fun that I ever did at my office. I even maintenance the skid steer myself. We’ll soon be buying several hundred goats to keep the place clean and have another income stream. Ive hardly noticed the pandemic with the ranch to escape to, along with my dog. My husband hadn’t yet retired, but hopes to soon.

I garden, enjoy the company of a little black scottish terrier, and make mosaics. I never sit down and I wouldn’t take any amount of money for even one day of the last 6 years since I retired. Not one!

Pick up teaching if you have the ability to.

Academia is in a sorry state right now, maybe join a trustee board if you have fundraising abilities.
