Apple brings 5G to iPhones but keeps the same price tags

New phones run on Apple custom chip that company calls the fastest yet for a smartphone

Apple's iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max have three cameras.
(Plus new rear LIDAR Sensor—Swordmaker)—APPLE

Apple Inc. is bringing 5G capabilities to its entire lineup of new smartphones, and keeping the starting prices the same as last year’s iPhones.

The company rolled out four new iPhone 12 devices during a virtual event Tuesday, focusing on camera improvements as well as applications that could be enhanced by 5G. All four of Apple’s AAPL, -2.65% new phones will work with sub-6G 5G, while U.S. phones will be compatible with millimeter-wave 5G.

While sub-6 5G is more widely available, it offers a less dramatic step up in speed and lag times relative to the 4G networks that consumers have become accustomed to in recent years. Millimeter-wave 5G delivers a bigger speed boost but its use cases are more limited to dense urban areas. The phones will have “smart data” modes that determine when to use 5G based on various factors like data usage and battery life.

Apple’s new iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max feature three cameras meant to deliver better photography capabilities. These phones will have an ultrawide camera, a telephoto camera, and a new wide camera that the company said will improve pictures taken in lowlight and bright environments. The telephoto camera on the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a longer focal length. Both of these models come with a LIDAR sensor, which Apple said will enhance lowlight photos as well as create better opportunities in augmented reality due to its depth-sensing capabilities.

I just read where Apple will not include the charger in the box, will be sold separately, probably for an extra $100.

I’m thinking of getting an iPad Air and keeping my iPhone X for another year. The Air would fill a gap in my day.
Good strategy?

Do you already have an iPhone?

Apple just upgraded the iPhone Air to run on the new A14 processor, the same as the new iPhone. If you already have an iPad, your iPhone X is getting long in the tooth and you might think of getting that and crippling along with your old iPad for a while longer. If you don’t have one, get the iPad and get the iPhone 13 next year, when it’s four years old.

Is it true that if you have 5000 or more shares you get a free Apple 12 phone.

No. 5000 shares earned 82¢ per share cash dividend in the last quarter. Apple cannot pay those who hold 5000 shares better than those who own 100 shares. The dividend for 5000 pre-split shares at 82¢ per share is $4,100. After split, after the split, assuming everything were the same, the dividend per share would 20.5¢ per share... and the dividend on 5000 shares would be $1,025. In other words, people with 5000 shares would essentially get a double dividend. That would be unconscionable to those who had less, and would not be legal.

Who would get the iPhone when the holder of the stocks is a mutual fund?

Ain’t baseless rumors fun?

PS: There are ~17.4 billion AAPL common shares outstanding. . . If we were to divide them by 5000 shares, that’d be ~340,000 iPhones that would have to be given out free.

There are authoritative articles which say it isn’t stupid. We’ll see in 5 years.

Which networks are currently 5G?

Both AT&T and Verizon have rolled out 5G in major cities, Verizon more so than AT&T. . . Most of the others ride on the coat tails of the big two, leasing bandwidth from them, so if their lessor is 5G, they will be too. It will be some time before 5G reaches smaller cities and the boonies. Even in the major cities, it is not everywhere available, concentrating in business districts and more affluent neighborhoods.

BIGGirl, only some Android phones at the higher end are 5G. Android is not a network. Android is a platform.

This sums up how Apple works.

Funny, but only the ignorant believe that’s how Apple works.

Some days my iPhone is a third testicle (part of me).

Maybe don’t hand your phone to friends to take a photo then. :)

Go buy the separate components too do what an iPhone 12 can.
Like camera, portable computer, stereo, network router, telephone, CDs, data storage, gaming console, TV, etc.
All those pieces will cost a lot more.
And not fit in your pocket.

Now, go buy them all miniaturized to fit in pockets and then find cargo pants with enough pockets to carry them all with you as separate devices. The charging bricks for all of them will make your electric meter spin like a dervish. . .

I usually don’t need a new charger. I have so many chargers stuck around in different places, I don’t need another. The ones that come with my new iPhone stay in the box. The new iPhones, all of them, can be charged with inductive charging and come with an inductive charging cable. Plug it into any 5V USB source and slap it onto the back of the iPhone. It magnetically adheres and charges the iPhone. Alternately, put the iPhone 12 down on any of many available inductive charging devices (some are as low as $10 on Amazon) and charge away.

Verizon offers millimeter wave version of 5G, delivers 4Gbit second. Apple testing in cooperation with Verizon found the Pro Series phones delivered 3.5 Gigabit down and 200 Megabit upload capabilities.

I was thinking of doing the same thing till I read about the expected features on the iPhone 13: a 4th camera, reduced notch, Touch ID in the display and/or power button and a 120Hz screen - I’m gonna try to wait it out.....

Don’t buy on fan rumors. I doubt that TouchID will be brought back, especially hidden in the screen. It’s a bad idea since TouchID is used to activate buying with ApplePay, it must never be accidentally activated which a screen TouchID could possibly do. Apple did get a patent for TouchID to be in the lower end iPhone power button. The IPhone 12 Pro has four cameras already. . . Plus front and back 3D LiDAR. I doubt there’s any reason for more cameras.

I also have the 11 Pro... and will wait at least another year before upgrading again. It has a lot of major upgrades this year, but for my purposes, I can’t see needing to do it. I’d love the new very, very low light camera abilities. . . And the 10bit HDR video is intriguing, but on the other hand, I’m not a videographer at all. The LiDAR looks very interesting and useful. I can think of some Apps that could be developed to take advantage of it, for example how about an app that could instantly measure everything about a room, accurately and calculate exactly how much paint, wall paper, flooring, etc. you’d need for a remodel, subtracting for windows, doors, etc. This could do that. It could also put in exemplar furniture, art, etc. For realtors, you could use it to take show pictures of an empty house, then furnish the room with your choice of furniture in any style with artwork to post on your website or Zillow. .. convert it to 3D walk through. But, again, I have no need to do those things.

Any comment/input on China’s censoring of the Apple broadcast?

For once, we may be on the same side. Seems China is punishing Apple for ‘something’.
