Nearly 10,000 minks have died across several farms in Utah due to COVID-19 in a matter of weeks, a state official said.
State veterinarian Dean Taylor told NBC News that the deaths have been spread across nine mink farms in Utah over just two weeks.
While the official noted research indicates there hasnt been a spread from minks to humans, he said that the minks suffered from respiratory issues, which have also been reported among humans.
Minks show open mouth breathing, discharge from their eyes and nose, and are not sick for several days before they pass away. They typically die within the next day, he told the network.
He also said that older animals have proven to be more vulnerable to the disease.

Terrific post. Thanks so much.
Not wearing fur is not politically incorrect...it’s just loving and respecting animals.
My father bought my mother the most gorgeous full-length mink in Chicago, complete with huge collar/hood. And I had a sheared raccoon coat when I was in high school.
That was a long time ago. Since then, many alternatives have appeared. I live in a city that usually gets very cold and I have a terrific down coat with a fake fur-bordered hood that’s now 12=years old. Also several coats/jackets that are wool and even some kind of heavy velvet-looking jackets made of good synthetic materials.. Boots with fake-fur tops. I do manage to stay warm without killing many, if any animals.
My precious cat thanks me. Not going to wear her!!!
I wonder if the infection of the minks was intentional by PETA?
For months now Ive been suspecting an alternative vector for the spread of COVID.
With all the masks, social distancing, hand sanitizer and caution that weve shown, how is it possible for ANY cases of Coronavirus to survive? Why have we not made the disease so scarce that a singel new case is newsworthy?
Ive suspected all along that the disease is hiding somewhere, in some other species maybe, and thats why new cases keep popping up.
