Can anyone here recommend good scary horror, sci-fi films that are suitable to watch with kids? My children are 9, 12 and 14 so they are too old for the young kiddie stuff but I don't want them watching anything with lots of blood and gore and profanity. I'm not interested in those types of films.
Films I have on DVD and have watched with my kids include Frankenstein (1931), The Old Dark House (1932), The Mummy (1932), The Black Cat (1934), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973) so I'm looking for films like this.
I have other films like Burnt Offerings (1976), Jaws and the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake but I don't think they are ready for that.
Anyone have suggestions?
I saw that as a child of 8 or 9 on VHS back when it was a hot title. All the adults lost interest and started playing cards in the kitchen, but I was enthralled by it. Never seen it again since. I probably should revisit it.
Make that 1958 for The Blob.
How about a ROMCOM?
Shaun of the Dead
So bad it is good.
Rated R for zombie violence/gore and language
On second thoughts you best watch it first.
Abbot and Costello “The Time of Their Lives” was one of my favorites growing up.
LOL! Youre right! I always forget that!
That movie freaked me out when they started peeling off their skin!
People.
The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
War of the Worlds (original 1953)
I’m not yet 60 and I LOVE these two.
Ghost and Mr. Chicken w/Don Knotts
Haunting of Hill House w/Vincent Price
Legend of sleepy hollow - Disney
Hold that ghost/Abbot and Costello
The time of their lives/Abbott and Costello
Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein but not sure if too scary?
Its the great pumpkin Charlie Brown
Just thought of a few more I enjoyed as a child that Ill throw out there:
Haunted Honeymoon (1986)
Frogs (1972)
Critters (1986)
The Monster Squad (1987)
I had forgotten that one ... I used to watch that one every Halloween. I need to get out the DVD again ...
The Raven (1963), with Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, and Boris Karloff.

If you like the old black-and-white movies, maybe pick up The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari or The Phantom of the Opera.
Vincent Price’s Diary of an Opium Addict is a must-see if you like weird-but-not-particularly-scary.
There are some great recommendations upthread.
Which are in German.
You definitely should! The songs are marvelous, our whole family loves musicals and this one is a real fave. Another one hubby and I like a lot is Chicago. We literally watched that 3 days in a row one time, kept stumbling across it and just kept watching!
Hocus Pocus is very funny, even with that gross Bette Midler. Our younger son and daughter-in-law have a tradition of watching it with our grandchildren each year.
Beetlejuice is still great, The Great Pumpkin and Charlie Brown, and not exactly horror but Clue, though many of the jokes are rather grownup.
American Werewolf In London has a kid friendly, funny gag running throughout, but it will otherwise likely scare them to death.
Great series Heartland from Canada..
Them.
I loved that as a kid! And Creature from the Black Lagoon, which today would be quite campy.
A good Zombie Flick: Train to Busan.
