Can anyone here recommend good scary horror, sci-fi films that are suitable to watch with kids? My children are 9, 12 and 14 so they are too old for the young kiddie stuff but I don't want them watching anything with lots of blood and gore and profanity. I'm not interested in those types of films.
Films I have on DVD and have watched with my kids include Frankenstein (1931), The Old Dark House (1932), The Mummy (1932), The Black Cat (1934), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973) so I'm looking for films like this.
I have other films like Burnt Offerings (1976), Jaws and the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake but I don't think they are ready for that.
Anyone have suggestions?
“Basically an all night scavenger hunt.”

When you mentioned Midnight Madness and then followed it up with the above sentence, I LOL’d.
Scavenger Hunt is also a great family movie!
“Lady in White”

That is a sad as well as spooky movie.
So sad and spooky!
For some reason I watch it around Thanksgiving, every year.
“Arsenic and Old Lace.”

There is a lot of adult humor in that movie.
I watched it as a child and loved it. When I saw it as an adult, I still loved it!
As an adult, the humor made more sense!
OP said for kids.
Is that a biography of Nancy Pelosi?
Thank you, Beowulf9-! Just placed my order!
Never thought of EBay-!
Was looking a catalog after catalog. LOL
Something wicked this Way comes, the movie version of the ray Bradberry novel. They only took a small amount of liberties with the original story. Perfect for young teens and parents, possibly too scary for younger. Although like the old-time horror movies, no one you like gets killed. Thats always my criteria for a good movie.
I was terrified of The Birds as a kid and once when my daughter was a teen we rented it on a visit to my mom’s house. We both told her how great it was. In these days of CGI it was cheesy and not scary at all! We all laughed and talked about how time and technology change things!
There was one movie with Lon Chaney and Vincent Price about vampires that was so scary I couldn’t sleep afterward though.
Warning: You will literally die of fright.
Legend of Sleepy Hollow - Disney
Add.... It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown ,
and that is my Halloween collection.
Another addition may be --- Cat People, 1942 ---Takes place in modern day Sleepy Hallow involving a malevolent lady seeking to harm a young child. I found that hard to believe such a plot would be released in 42....
The Midnight Hour - 1985
Audiobook The Beckoning Fair One by Oliver Onions is riveting! Its on YouTube.
Ooh! Glad I could help :)
Good memory! I forgot! Plus, it’s pretty gory anyway.
The Fly (1958)
Frankenstein (1931)
Bride of Frankenstein (1935)
Island of Lost Souls (1932)
House of Wax (1953)
FORBIDDEN PLANET IS ONE OF THE BEST FILMS EVER MADE, AND HOLDS UP REMARKABLY WELL TO THIS VERY DAY! GOOD CHOICE.
I LIKE YOUR NOM DE POST...COCHISE, MERRILL, LOTS MORE.
