Good family-friendly films to watch for the Halloween season?
10/10/2020

Can anyone here recommend good scary horror, sci-fi films that are suitable to watch with kids? My children are 9, 12 and 14 so they are too old for the young kiddie stuff but I don't want them watching anything with lots of blood and gore and profanity. I'm not interested in those types of films.

Films I have on DVD and have watched with my kids include Frankenstein (1931), The Old Dark House (1932), The Mummy (1932), The Black Cat (1934), Bride of Frankenstein (1935), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), Don't Be Afraid of the Dark (1973) so I'm looking for films like this.

I have other films like Burnt Offerings (1976), Jaws and the 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers remake but I don't think they are ready for that.

Anyone have suggestions?

Yep. I like the Fog from 1980

I can think of two reasons that I liked "The Fog".

Not all of them. “What knockers!” Is definitely in English. Then of course the rape scene where we are introduced to “oh sweet mystery of life, at last I have found you...”

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a funny movie, but not appropriate for youngsters.

Referring the door knockers (innuendo) and also it wasn’t a rape scene.

Another one that was scary to me was “Carnival of the Souls”. Very creepy! I’ll watch Bugs!

I was home one afternoon and took a nap, woke later, put on tv, and Carnival of Souls was on. I had never heard of it.

Never forgot it. Wow.

HA! That is so funny you say that. I too once woke up in front of the TV with that movie on, I had only seen it once years before but I recognized it immediately! There really is some power in that film.

Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Abbot and Costello Meet the Mummy are good ones for Halloween-time.

Wait Until Dark is a very scary film with one of the best villain portrayals ever.

“Arsenic And Old Lace” is so funny. Not scary; just funny.

I think my favorite Halloween movie is “The Shining”. The book is better, but the movie will do for Halloween.

Vincent Price was a staunch American. At the end of his radio show (The Saint) every week he usually included a spoken patriotic comment.

If you can get it i had to buy a dvd of it but a very very very good old movie with Fred MacMurray is Murder he says. Not scary but has the old spooky thing about it, not ghosts, and mild humor, very cute. Really a great movie any time of the year.

Do you have a DVD of it?

I’ve been trying for YEARS to purchase that movie.

Every. Single. Time. It’s SOLD-OUT.

Augh.

Hi, Beowulf9-!

Just saved the link!

I so enjoy that movie and cannot find it to purchase, in any of the catalogs or on-line.

It’s either Sold Out or no longer carried when I call in to order it.
