THE FUSION MOVEMENT; THE PRINCE AT RICHMOND; A Wife Murdered by Her Husband (10/8/1860)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 10/8/1860

Mr. H.J. RAYMOND made a speech on Friday night at the Republican Head-quarters of the Sixth Ward, in Brooklyn, to a large and intelligent meeting, upon the perils and prospects of the pending Presidential canvass. A considerable portion of his remarks were devoted to a critical analysis of the attempted Coalition of the three parties opposed to LINCOLN in this State, -- and a presentation of the danger which this Coalition, if successful, threatens to bring upon the country. As this topic just now engrosses a large share of public attention, we publish below an extended report of that part of Mr. RAYMOND's speech. Mr. RAYMOND said he did not propose on this occasion to enter upon any statement or vindication of the principles of the Republican Party. That had already been done so often and so clearly by the eminent gentlemen who had preceded him in this series of meetings, that it was comparatively unnecessary. He should ask their attention to a single feature of the pending canvass which was peculiar to it, -- which distinguished it, in a marked and not very creditable manner, from all the Presidential contests that have taken place in the past history of our Republic. Hitherto, said Mr. R., all our Presidential contests have been contests of principle. The country has been divided into two or more political parties, each having its own platform of principles with its candidates representing them, -- and each striving earnestly and honestly to elect those candidates, for the sake of giving its principles the ascendancy in the national councils.

It looks like the “fusion movement” was the Never-Lincoln crowd of 1860.

The Fusionists do seem as confused about what they stand FOR rather than against as today’s Nevertrumpers.

From the names of those involved, it appears that the husband who killed his wife were Irish, living in an Irish tenement. I wonder if that will elicit a comment from our Mr. Strong, who is often scornful of the Irish?
