A Florida man was arrested Monday after shooting an AR-15 assault-style rifle at a U.S. Census worker who had come near his property.
Flagler County deputies were called to a home in Bunnel, about 70 miles north of Orlando, around 6:15 after the Census worker reported that Michael Cooper, 32, had fired a shot at him, according to WKMG-TV.
Neighbors told officers that the Census worker had parked on the street, away from Coopers home, in a vehicle that identified him as a Census worker. The worker was also wearing a lanyard that identified him as a Census worker. The man was also clearly heard identifying himself as a Census worker.
Witnesses told officers that Cooper started screaming at the man as soon as he began approaching Cooper, who was on the homes porch. After yelling at the man to get off his property, Cooper allegedly went inside the home and returned with a black rifle and chambered a round.
As the Census worker turned and walked away, he heard a gunshot. The victims wife, who was in the car the Census worker had driven to the scene, then began honking her horn as Cooper allegedly raised the rifle to aim at the victim.

C'mon man, grab your Ruger 10/22! 😄
“Assault-style rifle,” “black rifle,” super extra scary, O noes!
My sympathy is with the census worker, who is just trying to make some money. I think people who don’t want to be counted shouldn’t be.
Nothing better than a “Florida Man’ piece . . .
except maybe a “Florida Woman” piece.
Wait...was that wrong?
Sometimes Florida man is funny and stupid. Sometimes Florida Man is just stupid.
Pellet gun is better.
I'm sure there was some sort of alcohol involved here. 😁
But was he riding an alligator while firing?
Alcohol, drugs, or both.
My rule of thumb whatever the species: if its alive, and it lives in Florida, it wants you dead. This simple principle has served me well, as Im still alive to this very day
Insufficient information to make an assessment. How far back on the property was the mans house? You have to travel over more than an acre of woodlands to get to my house from the nearest street. I wont be able to make a determination as to your identity until your right up on my house. I often answer the door with a side arm but have never had the occasion to draw down on someone. When youre in rural parts of any state, you should be prepared to identify yourself. The Census worker is a sworn agent of the federal government. They may not like the idea of being in the line of fire, but a stranger on our property in these parts isnt going to be met unarmed.
If you enter someone’s property, and they yell at you to leave ... you stay there until they go inside and come back with a rifle? I would think you would leave when they told you to leave.
“Be wary of strong drink, it may lead you to shoot at tax collectors,......and miss”
RAH
Every time there’s a Florida Man post it should be accompanied by the 1960d era TV Batman theme !
Perfect.
>>...had fired a shot at him...
Well... the results wouldn’t indicate so.
Yeah, well, at least, unlike that census worker that tried to quantify Dr. Hannibal Lecter, this one still has his liver.
