It may be that crows are conscious as well as clever. But as far as proving they are, this seems like nonsense. We cant even prove other humans are. We can only know for certain about ourselves. We have to rake it on faith that other creatures are player characters rather than npcs.

As annoying as crows can be at 5:30 AM if you have a bunch near your house, it is hard not to admire them.

They are very interesting creatures. My favorite story was related by a hunter:

Every year when he went deer hunting on his property, the crows would silently follow him around, making no noise, waiting until he bagged a deer and removed the gut-pack, after which they would swoop in for the feast. That part didn’t surprise him, he figured they knew a good thing when they saw it.

What he didn’t understand is how they seemed to know the exact day the hunting season would begin. When he would come out of his back door, ready to go, the crows were ready to go as well, sitting everywhere getting ready to follow him.

What the Hell...could crows read signs or calendars???

Then he realized one year, that they figured it out by watching him through his windows. As soon as he started pulling out all of his hunting gear, putting it on his dining room table, waterproofing his boots, cleaning his gun and such, the word got out in the crow world:

He’s almost ready to go hunting...be prepared to follow for a tasty gut pack banquet!

I used to dislike crows and Blue Jays, but as I have gotten older, I have changed 180 degrees. I think they are fascinating and can be hilariously entertaining to watch, especially Blue Jays.

Cardigan can’t fly, but he can roll down steps like water while reaching out with his paws to some intangible bliss.

I lived and worked in Michigan, with cornfields to the one side and Lake Huron to the other.

There was a McDonalds across the parking lot across from our establishment. Toss a French fry on the ground and a crow would come from one direction, a seagull from the other.

A seagull vs. a crow for a French fry is an EPIC battle producing many hours of entertainment.

Anyone who grew up on a farm knows crows are damn smart...and you didn’t have to spend millions studying them either.

Another animal I admire is the Hippo. When a pack of wild dogs attack a antelope, the hippo comes charging in and protects him from the dogs. When a crocodile get ahold of a wildebeast foot and tries to drag it into the water, hippos show up and attack the crock letting go of the wildebeast.

I was sitting on the porch one morning drinking my coffee. I saw our cat preparing to do his morning business in the planter. There was a Stellar blue jay watching him from the eve of the garage. The cat got everything just right and backed up to use it. Right then the blue jay swooped by and 5he cat leaped at him. Back to fixing the hole. The blue jay watched from the bird feeder. Cat got ready and swoosh, the bird flew by just out of reach. This happened four or five times. I was dying laughing.

While mowing my lawn a crow landed on an overhead wire...

How did you train the crow to mow your lawn?

Corvids include crows, ravens, rooks, jackdaws, jays, magpies, treepies, choughs, and nutcrackers.

I can testify that blue jays will remember stuff for a very only time.

Our cat caught and ate a blue jay fledgling. For 4 years the parent bluejays dive bombed anyone coming into our yard and inflicted cuts and bites on several.
