Why Do Some Republicans Drift Leftward?
American Thinker ^ | 1 Oct, 2020 | Steve Feinstein

President Trump's new Supreme Court nomination has some Republicans fearfully remembering past (and current) justices who have changed their spots.

The liberals' worst nightmare has come to pass: Ruth Bader Ginsburg died during the Trump administration. Many supporters had urged her to retire during Obama's tenure so he could appoint her leftist successor. But with arrogant defiance, Ginsburg stayed on the bench, certain, no doubt, that President Hillary Clinton would name her successor.

Reality's one tough customer.

Now President Trump has nominated Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. We'll let all the others recount her unimpeachable credentials. Suffice to say, Mrs. Barrett is at least as qualified for the bench as was Mrs. Ginsburg. Ginsburg was confirmed 96-3 in just 50 days. Historically, it doesn't take long to confirm Supreme Court justices, so let's dispense with that straw man. There's plenty of time before Election Day.

SNIP

Unfortunately, this softening seems to happen pretty often with conservative Republicans, whether it be judges or politicians. They wander from their conservative ideals, the ones that got them appointed or elected in the first place.

For politicians, the examples are endless. The much ballyhooed "Maverick of the Senate," John McCain, was celebrated by the liberal mainstream media because he frequently sided with the Democrats. Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are two examples of "Never Trump" Republicans whom liberals love so much. So admirable and principled, no? The liberal media love to highlight NeverTrump Republicans as some sort of "proof" that President Trump is unworthy. When Romney ran for president, the liberal media portrayed him as the most misogynistic spoiled rich kid imaginable, complete with his infamous binders of women, his pretentious new house with its car elevator, and a foreign policy stuck in the 1980s.

LOL! I attended a college Libertarians party once. They were so cranky they couldn’t even decide on who should gather the money to bring refreshments.

Stockholm syndrome.

It’s from living in cesspools like DC or NYC or any state capital like Austin.

Your neighbors are liberals, your friends are liberals. Your kids go to school with liberals.

Live apart.

the Epstein maneuver would be as effortless as hot knife into soft butter.

The opposite is as important. It takes a great deal to overcome the protection of the dominant Progressive media. Consider all the faults of Joe Biden, and how much he has been protected. Consider how difficult it is to make any charge stick against a darling of the Left.

Fortunately, we are re-entering an era of partisan media, such as existed at the founding.

When everyone understands most of the media are partisan, skepticism grows and becomes a potent force.

You are onto something. Now stop replying to my posts, I might start thinking I am popular and have to disagree with myself.

Why?

Because we are under a gaslighting attack. There appear to be two main sources for this, Russia and China. Both have prayed on partisan weaknesses, probably greed and notions of fair play, both of which have been weaponized.

It’s our impulse to try to mend differences, and that’s a good thing, but it also is a fact that there is a sizable group that is left out of the conversation, the independents. This group may even be larger than either party, yet they have no voice in a system that only recognizes party affiliation. The longer they are ignored, the crazier things are going to get.

I’m fearful that even after all of the Christine Blasse Ford nonsense that we fought so hard against, we may have ended up with another “Roberts” or “Souter” in Justice Kavanaugh.

John McCain, the “Maverick” of the Senate? No way! Maverick never got shot down.

But Maverick did lose an aircraft. Just ask Goose's widow.

Or if the new movie ever comes out, you can ask Goose's son.

From what I gather, we are under a gaslighting attack by foreign interests. Mistakes have been made, but most of us can only guess whats going on because we are being given the mushroom treatment, kept in the dark and fed sh*t. We are going to try to make sense of what is going on because we are human and that is what humans do, but your mileage is going to vary.

The social pressure is not something they can withstand. It’ takes tremendous courage, individuality and a pretty thick skin to think for yourself and resist mob mentality.

I have family, friends and co workers that I am no longer comfortable with and who I avoid.

Another reason is that they were never really principled to begin with. They were out for their own ambition and advancement. It’s really not that hard to buy off (or manipulate) people like that.

I think it is usually a pretty shallow motive, they simply want to enjoy all the cocktail parties and get praised in the NYT, WaPo, etc.

For sure. With Liberals, there is no absolute right and wrong. For them it’s all ‘relative’ and that’s why they love parsing every single question they’re asked. In the end, they stand for nothing except what will advance their agenda, here and now. The same question tomorrow, will get you a different answer from the same person.

They wiggle around all ethical and moral values and talk in circles SO much that you can get punch drunk, just listening to them. It’s like trying to reason with a drunk

Why Do Some Republicans Drift Leftward?

excess empathy/compassion leads to emotionalism, which destroys reason and rationality, which leads to primacy of passion over reason, which leads to evasion of reality, which leads to fantasy, which leads to lefturd loonism

Rush Limbaugh explained it once.

It’s because they are terrified of their shrill, shrewish, abortion-loving feminist wives.

Because they were never conservative, and were put on the court by RINO presidents, like the Bush’s.

For my entire life I have watched politicians LIE during the election about what they believe and would do in office. But they ALWAYS ALWAYS lie in one direction. They lie to conservatives (both democrat and republican) about what they truly believe.

I don’t believe we have had a truly pro-life president ever. Even Trump is not in my opinion, but at least he will do what he said he would do if elected (nominate pro life justices)
