Thomas Wentworth Higginson, October 1860

. . . It so happens that we have just had a visit from Edwin Morton, Gerrit Smith's private tutor, who went to Europe at the time of John Brown. “The wicked flea, whom no man pursueth,” Judge Russell satirically termed him: but he is a very cultivated and refined person and had that career among English literati which seems to be cheaply open to all young Yankees.

Italy will soon be reunited into one country.

Next up, Germany.

Why have Americans historically gone ga-ga for British royalty?

We went to so much trouble getting out from under them!

I’ve seen in some concurrent stories that the Canadians were not nearly so gaga over HRH. Maybe because they aren’t yet out from under.

IIRC, he made both the Irish and Scotch-Irish mad, which takes some doing. And, of course, the French are, well, French.

I don’t think I ever mentioned this, but I have a friend who works in the Harper’s Weekly art department, so I can get my hands of their illustrations prior to publication. That’s why I can share a picture of the parade George and Ellie and Annie and Cameron watched from upstairs at Tiffany’s. This picture won’t be ready for the October 6 Weekly. Look for it in the October 13 edition. Let’s keep this just between us, OK? I don’t want to get my friend in trouble with the Harper brothers.

So George was interested enough in the Wide-Awakes spectacle to rent a 2nd story window over Tiffany & Co. where he and Mrs. Strong, Annie Leavenworth, and somebody named Cameron could watch the parade in comfort. Tiffany at that time was not at the location where Holly Golightly went for breakfast. That was on 5th Avenue at 57th St.

1005_gtsa

In 1860 Tiffany was located at 550 Broadway. Here’s a photo from the 1850s.

Here’s what it looks like today. (Click on the top picture on the side window.)

Wow, that was really cool. Poor George. I agree with him about the Royal Visit nonsense. This is America, dangit!
